I find this truly awful and really quite disturbing.

HOW many of these dogs are stolen??? (lost is another matter really)

These posts leave me cold. Perhaps I'm naive?!?!

Sorry to take up valuable space with this post . . .

But I had to say something!!!

There are dogs being stolen to order, by chance and for working or breeding ALL of the time as well as the genuine dogs that get lost :( ......Its not nice but thats the way it is unfortunatly

It's just horrific isn't it?

And for us with Whippets, Greyhounds etc; just so frightening.

Yep, so many awful people out there out to make a quick and easy buck at the expense of others . . . . .

Just be careful Sam. Whippets are the least likely of the common sighthounds to be stolen. Mainly because most of the running dogs stolen are taken for illegal coursing which is of course poaching. (Not to be confused with legal coursing). The people who do this aren't interested in the dogs at all they are simply providing something to bet upon. Landowners are threatened if they try to stop illegal coursing taking place, if the dogs can't be caught or aren't any good then they are abandoned. This means that these dogs are left miles and miles away from home. Hence the setting up of Lurcher Search UK AND now there is a very good and effective dog warden network which helps as well.

Anyway the most common dogs used for illegal coursing are Salukis, saluki x's, greyhounds, greyhound x's and the bigger lurchers. Whippets are too small for most people's tastes. Thank the lord for that!

How you should be careful. Don't ever boast about your dogs ability to catch prey or even that it can run fast to strangers. If you've any premonition that you or your dog are being followed then if poss don't go straight home and find someone to walk with. Make sure that you aren't followed home. Be particularly careful if you go to lurcher events or coursing. Remember if asked your dogs are lame and can't work. ;) The dog is useless couldn't catch a cold. If you own a bitch then she's spayed.

If you are worried that someone is interested in your dog then you simply exercise him elsewhere for a while. Change walking routes go to different places everyday. That kind of thing.

Be careful. Be vigilant. I always put the area that the dogs are going from on first so that people can see if dogs are being stolen from their areas. If there is particular news such as the dog thieves moving down to the area where the Paignton show is being held ie Creedy Park Nr Exeter Devon. Then I'll advertise the fact.

Having your dog stolen is heartbreaking it changes lives. It damages them. Most people are never the same once it's happened. The cost to dog owners can be dreadful.

Take care and give your dog a hug from me. :huggles:

Oh God! Beleive me, I AM careful!!!

I am fortunate enough to have a Whippet who doesn't stray too far away from me.

Always vigilent. Always careful. My boy means too much to me to ever not be so.

I am extremely aware of how people can be . . . .

Thanks for the reply, and advice.

I have noticed your signature . . .

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!

Hugs

I had first whippet stolen from my property about 6 years ago and we flooded the area with piks and rewards to no avail. I am so wary of this happening again (even though we live in a different area) that I usually do alter my walking routes and I try to avoid talking about the dogs to people. I had a man ask me the other day where I lived and I was skating frantically around the issue to avoid him even though he stopped me outside his own house. Turns out this guy was a retired CID so must of just been naturally nosey!

What I was considering though was tattooing my dogs as there is someone local who offers this service. Is it worthwhile and is it more of a deterrant to thieves as I think micro-chipping is only useful if you loose your dog and it end's up in good hands?

they would have to have taken a dog to notic it was tattoed so it woudent realy detr them. greyhounds are all tattoed and they are taken quiet often. the only good it does have is it may help you to get your dog back if they dump it. as we have 7 sight hounds we never walk them from our housewe drive them to were we take them out and drive them back. its easyer to see if someone is following us in the car. and if they are we carry on driving to the police staion.

my back garden is like a fortus and we dont even let the window cleanres do the back windows as the gat is locked twice.
