What are your thoughts on putting a bitch on the pill say for a month?? I have two bitch's that come into season every six months with out fail, i just get them race fit and in they come again..... ;) I was told that the pill slows the bitch down and does not do their kidneys much good either............ ;)

There are various ones on the market, i got told by my vet that it had improved a lot over the years & that if used correctly ie 5 weeks before the bitch is due in won't have any effects on her speed but if you leave it too late it will slow her up just as much as having a season would. As for just putting them on for a month, like i say they are all different & can be given in different ways & depends on each one for how long you take them.

I also asked about fertility problems later on in life & it was pointed out to me that nothing is perfect, although it isn't proven to reduce fertility it also isn't proven to not reduce fertility. Although it was tempting for me to give it a try, with Ella's close female relatives not being very fertile to start with i decided not to take the chance (i'll probably be on here in the next couple of months saying how i wished i had tried it lol).

I'm sure other people on here will be using it as we speak & can give you more info!!

Hi Jo Jess

Many years ago I had a little blue bitch (from racing lines)who I knew was due in season when we were due to go on holiday. My mum always looked after my dogs whilst we were away and as she only has dogs I decided to get 'the pill' from the vets to prevent her season. The vets we normally used was closed so we used a different vet. BIG MISTAKE she had a really bad reaction to it and I nearly lost her. Usually a very very lively bitch she was jusy laid on the settee all the time, never got up when anyone came home, then she stopped eating. I racked my brain to think what it could be and ended up taking her back to my own vets, who told us to stop the 'Pill'. A few days later she was back to her normal self.

So after my own experience with the Pill I would never use it again. I just leave nature to its own devices and if they happen to be in season when they are entered at a show then its just tough they dont go.

As a matter of fact my two youngsters missed Crufts in 2001 :( as they both decided to have their first season the week before!! Never mind we went dogless and shopped shopped and shopped!!! :p :p :p

Thanks Dawn and Vicky, I think you may be right, better to let nature take it's course..... :p :D :)

It is normal (and Legal) in the USA for all greyhound bitches at the track to be on low doses of Testosterone year round to prevent them from coming into heat. In the USA all the dogs are housed at the track so to have bitches coming into season would cause chaos!

Research by the Oregon State Vet. Univ. showed no adverse effects or enhancement in performance , aside from the obvious one, that they were able to race year round. Only a very low dose is required to prevent them coming into season. The Testosterone was administered either orally or sub Q.

I have tried it on the Whippets and it works. (Smaller dose of course.) I have also successfully bred bitches that were for a time on Testosterone both Whippets and Greyhounds. In pill form it's neccessary to administer twice a week.

suggest you ask john gill or andy-foster about stopping a bitch comming in season it aint natural so why even consider it does winning mean that much fluke is a six month break-ing bitch and we dont even think about stopping what is natures way of giving the bitch a rest do so at your peril

winning aint that important , my whippets health and well being is the most important thing to me as they are pets first and racing dogs second, so i guess my answer is we will not be using the pill......... ??? better safe than sorry as the saying goes....... :D
