The Big Tick Project

Ah.... not recommended then @Caro Perry ? I don't use it and haven't heard much about it if I'm honest.

I saw this company at Dogfest and this is where they told me about their 'Big Tick Project' (didn't notice any signs with Bravecto on)

Well -the leaflet that comes with it admits that seizures, polydipsia (abnormal thirst) lethargy and loss of appetite are side effects. All these are identical to Harri's otherwise inexplicable bout of serious illness that occurred a few days after he had his first (and last) dose of Bravecto.

BRAVECTO® (FLURALANER) | 12-Week Flea & Tick Protection For Dogs & Cats

You'll need to scroll down to the important safety information at the bottom of the page

Bravecto has hit the headlines big time here in NL with several people claiming their dogs have become seriously ill or even died after use the EMA (European Medicines Agency) have launched an investigation into its use and it has featured on a tv show similar to watchdog. In June a report required the ammendment of the product information but as yet have not declared the medication to be dangerous. In fact they said *The European Medicines Agency decided that Bravecto Plus’s benefits are greater than its risks and it can be authorised for use in the EU.*

Thank you both! very important that people are made aware of this then. I wonder what Bravecto have to say about it....

They say there have been over 55 world wide studies on dogs with some being given a dose of Bravecto in one month equal to that of a 100 year dose and there are no ill effects noted..

I think that is a barbaric trial anyway.

That sounds awful. That's the company that have said that?

Shoot...I read it in one of their statements and now I cant find it again ..If I remember where it was I will provide the link.

Oddly too - given they are marketing via the Big Tick project the leaflet says it does not protect against tick borne parasites as they have to bite the dog first before it can be effective. That initial bite can infect as it injects the parasites into the dog's bloodstream.

I'm using repellents on Harri to try and keep them off him in the first place!

We use Bravecto as recommended by our vet, no side effects we've noticed and he's been on it for the best part of two years.

The 100 year dose thing, if it can be substantiated - that will be scaleable, not injecting dogs with obscenely massive doses. Whilst the internet is useful, don't believe all the hysteria!

Im glad your dog is fine with it , hysteria? No I wasnt hysterical, Ive been reasoned in what I said and the line about the 100 year dose was a test result that dogs had been given a dose of the medication in one month equal to a normal 100 year dose. No hysteria no mention of how it was done just over the course of a month.
I cant find it atm and Im not even sure I can be bothered now. Obvioulsy as you have used it with no ill effect it must be 100% safe..

However this biologist says differently and she pints out a major flaw in the treatment ie; the parasite must bite the dog first! What we aim for is a repellant not a blood borne toxin that will kill the parasite only after it bites.

I am now extremely anxious after reading all these posts about Bravecto. Dudley has been having Bravecto for two years. He previously had to have a tick removed and the vet recommended it to prevent any further ticks. He has been fine and no ticks. I really don't know what to change him to. My sister in law has Advantix local application and her dog has had skin lesions where it is administered and flea infestation

Dog react differently just as humans do. Murphy has some local itching from advantix but it soon passes. I used to use frontline but it has been faked a lot and is no longer considered effective. The main thing is to use a deterrent or else the dog will still get bitten which imo makes the product useless.

When it comes to reactions my beagle couldnt have certain worm treatments because they made him dizzy and he looked as if he had had a stroke. The other dogs had no ill effect from the same medication!

Many dogs are clearly fine on it but some seem to suffer catastrophic side effects. We're now 4 months post dose for Harri and his energy levels are only just returning to what they should be. I'm told it will be at least another month before it will be out of his system completely and it may take longer.

If Dudley is fine on it I personally wouldn’t change it. You may cause more upset that good

I wasn't saying you were hysterical, @Mad Murphy, it's just that if you pick almost any subject, somebody somewhere will have an hysterical reaction to it! Yes, it has been apparently 100% safe for my dog, I can only report my own, limited experience. That said, I've seen concerns raised here before, so perhaps it's time to properly investigate alternatives.

Marley and Oliver take bravecto and have also been fine on it, got to admit all the bad reviews about it had made me think carefully about using it and on Rolo. Its difficult when there is bad reviews on it and really anything we give our dog's, at the moment Rolo is using advantix being honest i dont like the stuff it just seems to run on my whippets and they end up covered in it! That was why i went on bravecto in the beginning and they love the taste.

Evie had her first dose of Bravecto yesterday!! I had no idea there was all this controversy around it. She's had loads of ticks in last few weeks and vet recommended Bravecto. So I have my fingers crossed. So far, so good.

Can I ask why your vet reccomended it? Did he /she explain how it works? Just wondering because mine doesnt even stock it and only recommends deterrent type treatments.
