Surprising Behaviour

We're just back from a walk and Grace did something that really surprised me. I wondered if anyone else's whippet does this. She caught a young rabbit - her second ever! - so, to let her eat it if she wanted to I sat on the river bank. Instead of doing that she dug a hole in the river bank and very tidily buried it . I'm just hoping it she won't dig it up again in a week or so :x . At least she seems to be saying that she is well fed!

its better that she doesn't eat it whole, due to worms and other parasites, my cat died young from liver cancer due they think to the copious amounts of rabbits he devoured!

I'm having to worm mine more frequently than normal at the moment because of the baby rabbit catching that is going on!! (w00t)

Unfortunately, there's too much competition at my place for any burying to be done ......... devouring immediately is the only option :lol:

Im afraid mine dont bury them either,... but its the wild instinct coming out...saving it for later... :lol:

like Janes...mine devour them before I can get close..then its a fight to retrieve them, the ones I do manage to get to I sometimes bring them home if they are

not flea ridden that is.....

I also worm mine every 3-6 months... :thumbsup:

My oldest girl Kerri has done that before. She'd already killed and eaten one (adult) rabbit then she went and caught another, not being one to retrieve she disappeared off into some undergrowth, dug a hole and buried her second bunny. My guess is that she'd eaten enough after the first one and was feeling a little full so buried the other for later (w00t) .

I used to have a lot of problems when mine caught a rabbit. The dog fights were horiffic and the vets bills ditto.

Fortunately, Lilly and Toddy wear racing muzzles (they eat all sorts of disgusting rubbish otherwise and Lilly can be nippy with other dogs).

They can chase bunnies as much as they like but cannot dismember them in front of an appalled public or bring them back to me for the dispatch

I do not like muzzling them but Toddy has a sensitive stomach and a specail diet and Lilly is not totally trustworthy as far as returning for her lead when another dog is approaching.
