I'm really enjoying my first whippet, a rescue dog who we've had for three months. I was wondering by how much a dog really bred for racing would beat an average chap like mine over say 100yrds. My dog seems pretty quick to my untutored eye, and although he's not KC registered and therefore can't race I'd be interested to have some idea of how he'd compare. It's such a privilege to watch him go!

Glad to hear you're enjoying your first whippet so much. I bet it won't be long before you have another :biggrin: They are very addictive and an easy breed to keep in numbers. You say he is not KC registerd but is he a pedigree? You could try racing him at a non-pedigree racing club but they are an awful lot faster than the pedigree whippets. :sad:
Individual dogs vary such a lot in speed that it would be impossible to say how he would fare against a racing bred dog. At Oxford Whippet Racing Club (a pedigree club where most are from racing lines but some are not.) handicaps currently range from about -8 (fastest) to about 34. Each mark means a handicap of 2 foot so that would make a difference of about 28 yards (racing over 175 yards) between the slowest and fastest dog there. In practice races are made up of dogs on similar handicap marks so that no dog has to give away too many yards to another.
AT the end of the day, the only way to find out how fast your dog really is, is to take him racing. Your right though, racing or not, it is lovely just to see them run.

you. Your dog is obviously a pedigree whippet even though you don't have his KC papers.
The non-pedigrees are dogs of whippet "type" and range from 14-40lb+ (Ithink). They often have a certain amount of Greyhound blood. I am not the expert though. Try posting a message on the non-pedigree forum.
Just to confuse you a bit more, this is Judy (Mistress of Disguise) masquerading as Nigel. I am using his computer at the moment and look nothing like his avatar I hasten to add. Mind you ..... neither does he. :biggrin:
