Spaying and Season

Olive is a 2-year-old Miniature Schnauzer that had her litter of puppies on the 9-10th January. Her last season was on approximately the 29th of October 2017. We are 100% sure on that we don’t want to breed again from her as she had a little bit of difficulty pushing and it costs so much. We are not sure for when to book an appointment for her to be spayed, can she be spayed 4 weeks before her season? (Olive is 6 weeks off her next season). I am going away on holiday tomorrow (3a.m.) So, don’t think I’m being rude if I don’t reply to any of my treads, we also don’t have WIFI so I will have to use mobile data which costs a lot. Any comments welcome, thank you in advance for helping out with Olive’s health

6 weeks before a season is to early, recommended time is half way between seasons, speak to the vet , they will advise .

Well you should be able to judge who is a good vet or not, just find another vet. Can't you remember yourself when the right time to spay should be?

i am looking but all the dogs are registered at this vets. I cannot remember but i know it has to be 4-5 weeks after they have been weened.

The general time-frame for spaying post-litter during the lull in hormones falls between 12 & 16-weeks after whelping, so yes, it's coming within a fortnight - I'd schedule it now.

U've got a month - "between 12 & 16-weeks post whelp" is considered the optimal window.
Her pup is coming 11-WO; it's not a crisis, where U've only got a few days to get it done - BREEDING has urgency, as the F is in standing heat for just 3 to 4-days, & best practice is to mate her 2X. // Desex by contrast is much-more forgiving.

Also, as many of us have already noted, every estrus exposes her to significant risks:
- mammary cancer later in her life, which is ~70% fatal on diagnosis in the US, as it's metastasized.
Each added estrus raises her risk by at least 11%.
- UTIs within 90-days, during or after her estrus.
- pyometra, potentially fatal, during or after her estrus.
- ovarian cysts or other illnesses.

And of course, there's always the risk that she'll get pregnant; or she enters pseudopregnancy, & her spay is delayed for months while her hormones ebb; she might even need suppressing meds, to dry up her lactation. // None of this is fun for the dog - being sequestered while in heat, her walks are curtailed, she can't romp with her buddies, she's incessantly grooming to keep up with the discharge, she's stressed & cranky, she's frustrated by wanting to roam & solicit Ms, she's being fiddled with to get her britches on & off, & panty-liners changed...

Why would U delay it further, & put her thru another estrus for no valid reason? I just can't fathom it.

Okay I’m just asking because if the vets haven’t got any spaces free for me to get her booked in then I will need to postpone it... I would rather get it over and done with but it’s obviously better to do it now instead of her having an increase of the cancer and health problems. I will do anything for dogs and any animal if needed health care or looking after, so I promise I have and will look after Olive and Doris with my full ability and kindness.

@excuseme when would you spay your bitches after they had puppies? How long would you wait before spaying your girls?
