Ok for those that don't know i will sum up the story. On mon mum found a baby hedgehpg on our doorstep, worried because he was so small she put him in a box. She rang our local animal rescue who said if he weighs at least 600grams he will be ok to hibernate any less and he would die . So we weighed him and he was only 250-300grams. Mum rang back to tell them and they said they'd taken him but they had 80+ babies in, so we decided to keep him until he is the right weight. At the moment he is just under 500grams. I'v taken a few pics for you all to see

Well done you for caring for the little mite. :huggles: Last winter we found two babies & there are some wonderful people out there who work for Hedgehog Rescue who gave us some advice & info.

If you need any help Hedgehog Helpline 029 2062 3985 or 020 8508 4056 are really good,

This is some advice they have on their site:

Any hedgehog seen out in daylight will need URGENT help

 

If you see a hedgehog weighing less than about 500 grams, that is about the size of a large orange or small grapefruit, at ANY time, whether day or night, pick it up, pop it into a box with food and water and contact us or your local rescue centre for help and advice.

 

A young or small hedgehog that is left out on its own will not be able to survive and will starve to death, by providing them with food and water they stand more chance of survival.

 

What to feed them on.

You should always put out additional food for a hedgehog. Do not give them bread and milk. Although the hedgehog will eat it, the bread swells up in the stomach and milk gives hedgehogs very bad diarrhoea. Many hedgehogs die of malnutrition caused by this wrong diet.

 

The best thing to put out for your garden hedgehog is cat or dog food.

 

Tinned Cat, Dog, Puppy or Kitten food. They prefer Chicken flavours best.

 

 

Cat or Kitten Biscuits. Only give meat flavoured biscuits, Fish flavours are not suitable as fish is not a part of their natural diet.

 

Spike’s Dinner hedgehog food either tinned or dry available from good pet shops or Direct from Spikes World who also have other quality hedgehog foods in their online store

 

Any cooked meat leftovers like chicken or mince. Chop all meat in very small pieces. Hedgehogs only have tiny teeth and cannot chew or tear big pieces.

 

Chopped Peanuts, Sultanas & Raisins

 

Mealworms make a tasty snack but some hedgehogs can get hooked on them and that can work out expensive

 

Small pieces of chopped mild or medium cheddar cheese

 

Lots of Water, especially in hot weather, Hedgehogs drink a lot of water

We also took a hoglet in last monday night as we found him/her in the garden and he looked a similar size to Snuffles - infact we followed advice from the RSPCA (as I couldnt get hold of a local rescue at that time of night) and he ate nearly half a pouch of Chyppe's puppy food overnight - so the poor little mite must have been really hungry

The RSPCA came and picked him/her up the following morning but since I have been in touch with a local(ish) rescue and they are inundated with little ones this year due to the weird weather and need help. I have persuaded my school to do a collection of tins of dog/cat food for them, I know that there are a million and one good causes to support out there but if you think that you may be able to help in anyway then go and get in touch with your local Wildlife Rescue, our local one alongside the obvious need for financial donations are also looking for donations of pet food, blankets and for volunteers to get involved with looking after the animals.

Good on you Eve and I hope that by his release time (April isn't it that they suggest?) he will be a happy and healthy hedgehog :cheers: Please keep us updated on his progress

I think that would be a good idea to keep him until at least April :thumbsup:

I know Hedgehog Rescue told me that the babies can NOT survive the cold.

Because our weather is all out of sinc at the moment, normally the last litters are born around july/August time & mum leaves the offspring around 8 weeks to fend for themselves BUT because we have had milder weather through Sept/Oct their breeding programmes are all out & the babies are being left to fend for themseleves too late on now in November when its too cold for them to survive alone

He looks happy & well with you so hopefully he will thrive & be fit for next April time :thumbsup:
