Hi all,

This might sound a stupid question to all you experienced lot (w00t) but im confused as to weather i should be teaching my new pup to sit or stand first??

My other whippet (first whippet) was brought as a pet so obviously i taught her to sit at a early age, as have done with dogs in the past, Ive done opens with her and taught her to stand and stay at a later date ( i.e when i discovered and got a taste for showing ! ;) )

However, new pup is my first 'proper' show pup and ive been standing her on the table a little and giving her little treats but if im teaching her to sit aswell obviously i dont want her to sit everytime i show her a treat! i.e on the table!

What do you guys do first?

Sorry if this post sounds a bit gobble-de-gush by the way! :teehee:

Any tips appreciated

I don't teach my dogs the sit at all. Just stand and wait or down.

i have never taught lola to sit and no trouble with her

if i was showing harvey i would have trouble with him as i have taught him to sit and he sit s on the table every time so if i was you i wouldnt. good luck what ever you do .

Yep same here, they go down or stand - no sitting! I find running dogs don't sit that comfortable anyway

Same here mine were all taught to stand and down never sit although they don't seem to like sitting if they beg they lie down and stare. Not that that works anyway . :- " The only one that seems to sit comfortably is William the greyhound Seems as if their legs are too long to sit comfortably

I never teach my dogs to sit, just down or stand, even obedience clubs usually appreciate that show dogs need to stand rather than sit. Once they are experienced in the ring, I have had no problems teaching them to sit for tit bits etc, but would never teach them to sit on a table at all,

No, don't teach mine to sit either, they seem to do it quite naturally anyway especially when there's food on the go, sitting with paw outstretched is not a problem.

Thanks for the advice  Good job I asked!, I didnt realise so many of you dont teach to sit, I'll stick to just standing for now then

I've had the same advice but still glad I read your thread as Ella does look a funny shape when she sits, like she's trying for a wee or is knock kneed - must just be the long legs
