Hi we've had our pup around a month now he's our first dog of any sort but we're loving having a dog around the house. We've started going around to a few shows and really enjoyed them everyone has been so friendly and we really didn't think it would be such an exciting day out anyway you probably know whats coming next, we are hoping to get a pup with show potential next spring but we havn't got a clue where to start.Would breeders at shows dislike being aproached directly ( I assume show day is hectic enough)and do they only like to sell to experienced dog owners any advice would be great.

Cheers

Steve

As long as you don`t approach someone as they are about to go into the ring most people will help you as much as possible. There are a few who take it far too seriosly that until they have finished showing that day it is best to steer clear, but they are much the minority, :b Is the pup you have not registered for showing ? I`m not sure who you got him from. What area you. You would be best going to a Whippet show .If poss. buy the latest Biennial as th at gives all breeders and photos of their dogs so you can see what` type `of whippet appeals. Some like brindles ,some Fawns ,some partie colours ,but don`t forget at the end of the day you are always taking the best dog home.! :D When I first started (more years ago than I can bare to think about)people were very helpful, Don`t be affraid to ask questions ,you might get different answers as we all see things differently, but I can honestly say its one of the best things I have ever done ,and I sometimes go to a show without a dog just to see all my friends, its more of a social thing than just showing your dog and going home when you`ve finished in the ring. You can also learn about the breed by watching too. hope I`ve noty gone on too long .any advice Ill be willing to help :)

Hi Steve

I am not sure which end of the country you live but if its not too far why dont you come along to The South Yorkshire Whippet Club Show in October. There are several Committe members who post on this board including myself and my husband who would be more than willing to help you in any way we can.

If you need any more details about the show just email me off the board and I will give you times, directions etc.

Thanks both to be honest when we got Leon we had absolutely no intention of going near a show, we just kept meeting people locally who were walking their whippets or we saw them in pubs with their whippets and fell in love with their dogs. So I'm afraid we did exactly what we shouldn't have done(sorry) and in our excitement bought the first whippet pup we came accross. We can't regret buying him because we couldn't have wished for a more affectionate dog (or better alarm clock) . He is a pedigree whippet we met the sire as well as the dam and both were lovely dogs, we have his KC papers and got the 5 generation family tree ,he does have a few champions on both sides it's just we got him as a companion and didn't even think about registrations and things(sorry again) so we don't know we just assume he's not I suppose, it's just it does look great fun showing and it was always our intention to have two whippets so we thought why not get a pup with show potential. Phew I can go on a bit can't I anyway thanks again and we will come to the south yorkshire show .

Cheers

Steve

Just from the lovely photo you have posted he looks to be of good quality. Hope to see you at South Yorkshire, look in the catalogue, ask a committee member to point people out and come and introduce yourself.

I will be at South Yorkshire with my dog who is marked very similarly to you pup.

LOL, what did I say last night Millie!!!!

Steve,

I would see how you get on with your first whippet first, quite often the pups that weren't bought as show pups are the ones who turn out to be the ones with the most potential!

I bought my first whippet last year, as a pet but thinking I may just have a little go at showing him and he has done okay and more importantly I have learnt lots about showing and met loads of lovely people. I have since kept my eye out for my next whippet and now have a 11 week old pup, bought as a show puppy (piccy on Mollees pups thread). But you probably can guarantee he won't do as well as my first one!! :D But as long as he is a lovely boy I don't really mind!

Have fun showing your first and keep an eye out for what you like and look into getting your second once you have decided what you really fancy and meet lots of lovely, whippet mad people!!

By the way I think your pup is a stunner! Keep posting the pics as he grows! I won't be at South Yorkshire, too far for us southern softies!

Good luck Jo

Speak for yourself Joe!!! I think I have done more northern shows this year than southern ones!! You have to go under the judges who you think will like your dogs better regardless of where they are judging. Richmond was 20 minutes away from home and I think it was the worst results my dogs have had so far this year!!!

Yes Dessie I couldnt quite fathom that out at Richmond, I told David to stand next to you in the challenge ??? and he said you never made it. I wondered if the brat was still sulking?

Yes I know Dessie, I was'nt implying you were a softie LOL!! I of course would be willing to travel for the right judge. I didn't go to my local champ show for that reason, which would have been under an hour away - a joy! My best result actually was in Scotland, which was a very long drive!!

My next champ show will be Midland Counties. As I am so new to showing I have done quite a few shows just as learning experiences and find out what judges like what etc etc. So it has been quite a long summer!

Have got SW whippet in two weeks so am looking forward to that.

No, Karen, the brat wasn't sulking despite having ruined Millie's t-shirt and being told off for that! He tried his best but the judge just didn't realise what a star he had in Junior!!!!!!! He obviously recognised that he was a poser because he said to him when he was on the table "Hello Snooty" ................ well, I THINK he was talking to Rupert LOL!!!! ;) :p ??? :D

Hi Dessie

have just seen a picture of your dog Ronan on the little black pup posting(I won't comment on who you named him after) but your right about their colouring our pup looks very similar.I had to laugh when you said the judge called him snooty, nearly everyone we've met while taking him out for walks has called him a poser or a bit snooty it's the way he ignores them and their dogs and trots past with his head up the air that does it ,he thinks he's far too important to be speaking to any of them Anyway if he turns out half as nice as Ronan we'll be more than happy.

Cheers

Steve

ps Couldn't resist posting another pic

He looks gorgeous Steve!

Slight confusion with my boys, I think. My brat that is referred to is actually Rupert, my dark brindle young dog (pictured elsewhere but I can't remember where! LOL). Ronan who is the same colour as your pup, is a lovely character, very loving and obedient and the biggest wuss out!!! He wasn't the one the judge called "snooty" but I suppose to people who don't know him (or, put it another way, who he doesn't know!!) he may appear reserved. Once you know him ..........watch out!! ..........you will wear him when you meet him. I have only entered Ronan at South Yorks because I will have young puppies at that time so don't want to have to leave home at the crack of dawn to get to the show for Junior Dog, which is what snooty brat Rupert is in!!

Hope to meet you there, please look out of us and introduce yourself!
