can someone please explain the difference between show leads with chains (half-check) and ones without? is one better than the other? should half-checks be used on whippets?...help!!!

I think its just down to personal preference and what works best with each dog. I had one from Whippet rescue, very fine leather without the half check and Archie didn't really like it as it stays right up behind his ears most of the time.

So with advice from the lady who owns his sire (who is very much the same in personality - ie VERY single minded - 'I have only one pace and that is the one I choose to go'!!! I now use a full metal very fine chain that lays completely back on his neck when he is moving and I only have it behind his ears on the stack. He prefers this but I wouldn't recommend this sort of chain normally, but I know that Archie never pulls and is very laid back so it works well with him :) I would never use this type on Stanley though as he moves very fast and pulls around the ring!

I would imagine the half check gives a little more control

Ooooh, even as a complete novice I can help with this one!

I bought what I thought was a lovely show lead for Ollie about three months ago and it came out of the bag for the first time on Tuesday night :- "

Luckily, Dessie had some forethought, and brought a couple for us to use. I however, said "don't worry I have one" and Sally took one of Dessies for Jake.

BIG MISTAKE  Mine was all material with a silver ring that the two pieces were threaded through. You push this little ring downwards to tighten the lead and then push another metal stopper (for want of a better word :b ) down to lock it all in place. This is fine if you want to spend all night fiddling with rings and stoppers trying to get it back in place :(

Sally was finding life a LOT easier using Dessie's spare, which was a gorgeous light brown leather with a half check delicate little chain that could be relaxed when necesary and tightened if need be just with slight lift of the wrist :D

Suffice to say, we shall be hoping to purchase show leads at either Newbury next Friday or NWA on Sunday :- "
