hi x

does anyone here keep Shetland Ponies?

there are two looking for a new home and we have the space and could do with some extra grazers :))

all we know so far is that they are five years old and they are to be sold together.

can they be kept in the same paddock as a few rams?

just off to grab a cup of tea and a choccie bar (cadburys new egg bar - my waist line thanks the person who posted the tempting picture of them and forced me to rush out and buy 4 (w00t) )

and to do as much online research as i can - but nothing beats speaking to someone who actually owns the animal.

all advice and warnings welcomed :)

I have two shetlands both rescue ponies they are fab...

They dont need that much space and mine live with a goose & a duck. And they are fine.

You will need to be careful with thier weight through the spring / summer as they can be prone to laminitis.

Where abouts in the country are you ????

I have horses for over 25 years so if you need any advice im happy to help.

Ps they can escape well.... so fencing needs to be really good !!!

hi tracey , i have had shetlands for many years , and can be little monkeys :- " as long as they are kept at correct weight with good footcare there shouldnt be any problems, general a hardy breed but prone to laminitus , very cheeky (w00t)

at hospital for check up at 12 be there for about 2 hrs but home after that :thumbsup:

there is a thread on here some where of our very elderly shetland bobby in my lounge , i will find it for you :D
 
All the shetland ponies my family had lived to 30 years plus (w00t) They are a lovely hardy pony and very intelligent. They don't suffer fools and will nip if tormented.

As mentioned in the other replies they are more prone to laminitis than some other breeds so must not be grazed on clover or other rich fodders.

They are a lovely breed. :D

we are in the very North East of Scotland - not far from John O'Groats.

i have never kept shetlands before so really do not know what to look for when i go to view them - should they be vet checked the same as when you purchase a horse?

getting really excited :)

it is great to know that there are folk on here that keep these cheeky chaps and are willing to tell all - good and bad :- " :D

i will let you know how we get on and pictures if we bring them home x
 
we have 4 shetlands.. :huggles: :huggles: .they are no trouble at all :thumbsup: tinkerbell was ment to be an escape artist with her old owner, but with electric fencing she has never (touch wood) got out since we have had her :wub:

you do have to mind they dont get to much grass as they can be prone to laminitus, sonny (11yr old) shetland has it, but since the grazing was limited and more hay fed, he has (touching wood again) not had a bout of it in years :sweating:

also they dont need to much grooming, and they dont need any rugs. ours only have feet trimmed every 10 weeks, but im sure they would go longer :teehee:

Just be careful with Shetland ponies and their feet, they are very prone to laminitus....we have a couple at the farm that suffer really badly and end up in starvation paddocks.

They are small ponies with large personalities too....very strong willed and as Tanya says can be little monkeys, ours especially when the blacksmith arrives.. :- "

If you have the room and time to care for them, Id say go for it... :thumbsup:
