Hi everyone,
My dog Morgan snapped his cruciate ligament and was admitted to hospital for surgery on the 9th and operated on on the 11th. There was complications with his blood clotting time and brusing and swelling in his leg after pin and plating so was kept in for a further 4 days.
I had only supplied naturediet wet food for two days so he was fed a sensitive dog food supplied by most vets. He lost weight on this diet
On returning home, his stools smelled horrendous, they had the smell of fermented grain. I had a look at the ingredients and it was nearly 40% corn and meat meal. Unfortunately Morgan has not fully recovered from what he was fed at the veterinary hospital. He's just not gaining weight. He's eating everything in sight and is still hungry. He was on coagulants for 7 days so this might be the result, but i doubt it.
I generally feed my greys on WolfTucker raw complete diet for supper and Nature diet wet for breakfast. They thrive on this with shiny coats, clean smelling breath and a stool with very little odour. I am taking Morgan back to the vet as I'm not happy with his weigh loss.
Has anyone experienced a problem with the foods baught from the vet?

No, but @excuseme linked an interesting article which says vets get supplied some of these foods by the manufacturers so they aren't exactly impartial. If you look at the ratings on www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk you may find they score poorly. I looked at some of these vet supplied foods for part of a course I was doing and there wasn't anything outstanding in the ones I looked at - the "science" and "prescription" labels were more for marketing than nutrition.

It's possible he's still affected by the anaesthesia and the stress. The last time Jasper had a GA he showed clear signs of not being quite right in the head a week after. Also I'm assuming your vet is aware that normal anaesthetics can be dangerous for sighthounds? If not, this could have upset his system too. So the problems might not be wholly down to the change of food.

I hope he picks up soon - it must be horrible seeing him losing weight whatever he eats. Do please let us know what the vet says.

Thanks,my dogs have been on raw diet from when they were weaned.
Morgan was put straight back on his natural diet as soon as he returned home. His stool was back to normal the next day.
The vet hospital is aware of the effects of anaesthesia on greys and we fully discussed this before admission.
The op itself was a a success, it's just that he's not regaining weight in spite of his ferocious appetite.
Hopefully the vet will have a plausible idea/solution. Perhaps it's just as well he's not gaining weight while on the men.
It seems it's us owners who suffer more when our beloved pet's are not the"full shilling"

That's good. I'm sure almost all are, but I know someone who lost a dog because her vet thought he knew better than she did so it's always at the back of my mind.

Myvets24-7 is a specialist in sight hounds. We couldn't get a quick appointment for Morgan and they recommend the Mandeville hospital. We still had a long discussion with the surgeon though. My hounds mean the world to us,and any vet who will not listen to us will not touch our beloved pets.
We left a vet who told us he's the trained vet and the breeder who has been breeding show greys for years knew nothing.
