Scruples Whippet Rescue Is Having Puppies!

Two weeks ago we rescued a beautiful whippet bitch from Wales.

She is called Meg and has settled into her foster home really well. Over the last week she has ballooned in size and her foster carer phoned us yesterday giving us the news that it looks like Meg is in pup.

Meg was scanned at the vets yesterday evening where it was discovered that she is 7-8 weeks pregnant with a litter of 4 or 5 puppies (scan wasn't totally clear). Meg is in good health and fortunately although the puppies look very long, they do not look like they have big heads or shoulders, so hopefully she will be able to deliver them without any problems.

We have no idea what she has been mated with, so we have no idea what the puppies will end up like. But what we do know is that we are going to make sure that they have the best start in life, and that Meg remains happy and healthy.

We have lots of bits and pieces for Meg left over from when Molly had pups, but would really appreciate any donations, no matter how small to cover all the vets bills that we will be hit with over the next few months.

I will update this page as often as i can with pictures of Meg and information about her pregnancy and pictures and informaton about the pups when they arrive.

Unless she needs a ceasarian why should you be hit with vet bills ? Good luck on a quick and safe delivery

not sure but maybe vet bills are just a round about term for all the "vet" stuff the puppies will need ie, dew claws, vet checks, worming stuff like that??

ill see if i can whip up some stuff to sell :thumbsup:

Vaccinations will be the big expense, I imagine!
 
Why do dew claws ? Its only show folk that do and on the continent they are left on, Ive only had one dog rip dew claw off, and that was a racing greyhound.

If you really wnat them off,Im sure one of you must know someone who would do it for very little expence . Not many vets will do them ,

Drontal oral suspennsion is ideal wormer for pups and can be brought over the `net`. Give me an address and I will post what I have left from my litter . Must be well over 50mls in bottle :thumbsup:

Surely that will be done by the new owners of the pups!

The vets bills will be for.... Health checks for the bitch. Health checks for the puppies, vaccinations, worming, removing dew claws (has to be done for the welfare of the dog, too many whips loose do damage to themselves when they catch their dew claws).

All puppies will go into their new homes fully vaccinated and microchipped.

I sorry, but I really think some you have mentioned are really NOT neccesary .

1) Health checks for bitch and puppies ? Cant YOU tell if the pups and mother are healthy without taking them to a place full of potential infections ? . Ive had 11 litters over 30 years and never had to take pups or mother for health checks .

2)Dew claws , as mentioned before IMO NOT neccesary , They are not allowed to be taken off on the continent and they do more racing , lure courseing and hunting than we would over here ,

3) vacinations can / should be done by new owners , having them done too early can , in some whippet cause problems eg Auto immune

however ,

Microchipping is an excellent idea

, See thats saved Scrubles a whole lot of money that could be used for better uses.

but what do i know
 
If you apply online to Burns or James Wellbeloved or Skinners etc they will send you puppy packs for the new owners and puppy food to wean the pups onto which will save a good amount of £ :thumbsup:

I think it needs to be said that any litter born into the Scruples fold gets rather special treatment - as did Molly's puppies :b . Being a rescue, we are in a different situation to a breeder as we haven't intentionally bred this litter, we are not making money by selling the puppies and of course we want these pups to have the very best chance to flourish and have happy and healthy lives (...... please don't think that I'm saying other puppies don't get this, I'm not, but our situation is wholly different to that of a breeder).

In addition to this, the puppies will be homed under the Scruples Adoption Contract and our constitution states that all Scruples' whippets will be vaccinated, microchipped and neutered (at the appropriate time) when they are adopted. We would be in breach of our Adoption Contract if we did not ensure that these rules are followed.

None of the pups will go to their new homes until they are at least 9 weeks old, more likely to be 10 weeks. This allows them to gain the maximum benefit of learning from their mother and I believe this gives them a sound and secure start in life. I have always collected my own pups at the age of 9-10 weeks and they have all grown into well balanced and happy whippets with no issues :)

Most owners acquiring a puppy at 8 weeks old will take it straight to the vet for the first vaccination - that isn't considered too young so why would the Scruples pups be too young to start their vaccinations at that age?

Dew claws are an accident waiting to happen with running dogs, especially whippets who have not got any protective hair, and it takes no more than a minute to remove these claws when the pups are 2 days old. Molly's pups had their dew claws removed by our vet - it cost £35 for 5 puppies. Not a high cost when you think of the extreme pain it can cause the dog should they catch a dew claw whilst running or mooching about after a bunny or two, not to mention to potential for surgery and general anaesthetic should the damaged claw need to be removed once the dog is an adult. It is also very painful and takes a while to heal.

I have never heard before that removing dew claws is purely for showing .... most well bred working or racing whippets will have their dew claws removed too - I think it's just the sensible thing to do and they are one of the first things we check when a whippet comes into Scruples' care.

We are going to do our very best for Meg and her puppies and that means spending a bit of money on them. Hopefully the birth will go without problems and luckily Meg will be having the personal attention of the local vet for the whelping as Meg's foster carer and the vet are best friends :)

Fingers crossed we will have a healthy litter of puppies and if we are very lucky they will be 100% whippet puppies :luck: Thanks very much to everyone who has donated towards the puppy fund so far - we really do appreciate it - and thanks also to those people who have donated items to assist such as Drontal puppy wormer from Jax, vetbed from Mel and the myriad of advice and help on offer from everyone too :thumbsup:

Well done Scruples for all of the work you do, I know its busy, hard, heartbreaking at times but so rewarding too ...... You all do a fantastic job :thumbsup: ...As you are a charity try and get a vet onside as my vet comes to my house, dewclaws and vet checks all my pups (the whole 4 litters I've had) and will bring out the wormer etc that I need at no extra cost, though on line is cheaper ... its worth it for piece of mind ... Good luck xx
