Apparently they have to close schools as the teachers can't get in to work. It is a good job that theose who don't go in aren't in the emergancy services. When I worked at a school I went in in all weathers, even snow. If the weather was too bad, I walked and it wasn't just 10 minutes away either.

I now await a scolding from all the teachers on here.

Back when I was at school we were regularly snowed in and I remember having to help my dad dig our way out. I always arrived at school, maybe slightly late but I never recalled the teachers not being there.

Did you see Obama's comment on the news on monday night. His kids were off school due to a bit of.....ice!!

Our school shut last year because of the snow......they said it was down to health and saftey ;)

but we had more snow here on monday than we did last year...and the school was open

Our school shuts for nothing - not when the boiler broke when it was minus 5 outside or when we have had snow the last couple of days...rumour has it we are due a ton of snow tomorrow...if school shuts tomorrow I'll be more than a bit miffed cos its my day off!!!

At the end of the last school year our school was having quite extensive building work done. Several times the workmen managed to break water/sewage pipes and the school was closed for part or whole of a day. Those taking exams had to go in despite there being no water or toilet facilities.

Yep all down to health and safety now apparently..not the decision onf the teachers either...

We went in in all weathers too...only had to walk 10 minutes...and my main strong memory of school in the snow.....

those small bottles of milk thawing out along the windowsills....with Ice poking out of the top...

Edited to say...you couldnt drink that either now...due to heath and safety... :p

We have become so dependent on the motor vehicle as our means of transportation that we have forgotten how to walk!!!!!

I don't ever remember my school closing, despite regular snow every winter. If it was too cold, we just had to put another jumper on.

Admittedly, it was in London so the snow was always cleared from the roads whereas where I live now will never see a gritter or ice-scraper within a 3 mile radius so I need a 4 wheel drive to get about.

There was a very steep pathway which we had to walk up and down to school and it was gritted but that was the only acknowledgement of any difference in the weather  .......... and the teachers were all there too :(

I requested this week off school for my two and was refused. We had to book our holidays for next week half term at three times the cost. They have been off 3 days now cos of the snow. At 6.45 text message said school was open then at 8.20 another said no it wasnt. We had all set off for school and work by then.

I remember that as well. We always had to walk to school as mum couldn't drive then (she is not much better now  ) we went in all weathers and I can remember sitting in a classroom with coat, hat gloves and scarf on as the heating packed up! The snow was much deeper as well, it used to come over my wellies and soak my feet!!

My neighbour is a teacher at the village school (3 minute walk if that) she didn't go in Monday despite the school being open. What impression is that giving the kids?

Gareth's school was closed today. We are not really walking distance from the school, he gets the bus in, Beds County Council cancelled all school transport again. The road was not good when I took the dogs out as they hadn't gritted it due to the shortage and the main bus was also cancelled again today.

ok I lied :clown: school waited for it to be my day off and then it closed for the day

There has been quite a lot of publicity in our local paper. We have hardly had any snow and yet lots of schools have been closed. One man wrote to the letters page that in Illinois, USA, snow days are much more frequent, however, if a school closes for a day because of snow, then this day is added on at the end of term, so that the children still get the scheduled number of days of education and the holidays do not start until this is achieved.

when we had 4 inches of snow on monday my kids school was open ,yet a few a go when we had hardly any snow it shut early due to health and safety  however my son told me that on monday a teacher slipped in the grounds of the school and broke her foot ,school remained open,no health and safety there then :-

we were closed for a day with the last lot of snow and have to make it up at the end of the school year so we stay open what ever now becouse we dont want to add any more days to the school year.

School transport running today but the local schools were shut  .

We must have 8" here now, the dogs love it as does Gareth, he was out all day with his friends. The roads were not passable as even the "main" road through the village was not gritted so I doubt the bus would have got up here anyway.
