Hello everybody
My name's Chris, I'm married with a son aged 10. We have a 12 yo male JRT (Skipper) and he's been with us since he was a little dot of 9 weeks old. Our other dog, Fawny, is a rescue Greyhound who will be 14 in January and we've had him for 4 years.
Fawny's in remarkable condition considering his age. He'd never been homed before coming to us and has taken to the relative luxury like a duck to water! His main hobbies are lazing around, and food (any kind, in large quantities if possible, and it tastes all the more yummy for being stolen when our backs are turned!). One of his back feet 'droops' occasionally these days which means we can't really take him for longer walks any more, but he enjoys a gentle amble around the block or the park and will play with us in the garden, so his quality of life is still great. Oh, and he has an awful lot of gas lol (we suffer from his gas, more than he does!).
Skipper has about 9 teeth left now, he's lost the remainder to gum disease over the years but has always been a funny dog where fiddling with his mouth is concerned so any type of preventative dental care was a problem. 2 years ago a pre-dental blood screen picked up elevated liver enzyme levels and he was diagnosed with liver disfunction (cause unestablished). We've managed the condition very successfully sofar via diet alone and he's still going strong, he has 6-monthly blood checks to monitor his liver function and although the levels have never actually returned all the way to normal, they've remained sufficiently low for him not to require additional medication. Fingers crossed. It certainly hasn't slowed him down at all and he's a typically bouncy jack, into everything and with the sort of energy I would give my right arm to have!
Our last dog, Sammy, was a JRT x Lakeland or Cairn. He made it all the way to 16 years of age before succumbing to old age and heart failure. RIP.
