Running In Coats...

Why is it a problem all of a sudden if your whippets are seen

running in coats ?

 

As long as K has her muzzle on and its a freezing day i let my

girls run in their coats. I like to see them belting along all snug,

it doesn't make them wimps or less of a dog than the one's

who run without a coat.

 

My girls are are as fit and hardy as most other whippets.

 

And it saves having to carry the coats while they are running,

as i would still take their coars to save them from walking home

wet and no doubt even colder after a run.

 

So why are people suddenly apologising for coats :lol:

I do exactly what I think is best for my dogs, and don't really care what anybody else says or does. Three of my dogs feel the cold and wear coats, the other two don't.

My main worry about running in coats is a practical one, I've had a dog injured (not seriously thank goodness) running full tilt when her coat came unfastened and she got tangled in it. Lesson learned, I only use coats with proper buckles now, not velcro straps.

That's something to be thought of......good point.

I must admit the ones with open fronts i stitch up

Mine don't run in their coats. In fact Simba and Archie don't even wear coats for road walking they have got coats but refuse to move with them on stupid boys. Mind you they do so much argueing with each other they probably keep themselves warm.

I run them without coats for the same reason as Feefee so they don't catch themselves on the coats. Also so I don't have to keep replacing ripped coats.

I can only run them in their fur coats, the ordinary one would get ripped in

the rough and tumble. But if i had the other coats on it wouldn't be this cold

so they would be removed before they were running.

I run Blue in a coat, but she doesn't run hard being a non-rabbit-chasing only whippet...but do tend to take it off to allow her to play with her friends...I couldn't care less what others do, Blue wears a well fitting coat and is never far from me for me to be able to sort her out if needed...

Mine mooch about in coats when we hit sub zero temps, or when wind chill is a factor in winter weather, but any sign of really hard running and the coats come off because I agree with others ... there is some danger of a dog becoming tangled in his/her coat when running, but tbh it seems unlikely as long as the coat is well fitted :thumbsup: They also wear coats before and after their winter runs even when it's not as cold as now ... bit like athletes with a track suit, the warmer the muscles before a run the less chance of injury, and you don't want them cooling too fast for the same reason. I certainly don't think my dogs have to prove how hardy they are by running 'naked' through the snow (w00t) I began my recent thread of pics with an apology for their coats I know, but that was largely because they hide the lines of the dog ... and my boys are so handsome in the fur :wub:

Grace runs in her coat and I've never had any problem with her getting tangled up in it. It does fit well and slips over her head rather than opening at the front, and is fastened around her middle with a buckle that clips snugly together. She feels the cold so much that when it is really icy she also has a knitted jumper underneath it!

I take them off when they're off lead because I reckon they keep warm enough when moving about and put them on the way home so they don't cool off too quickly.

I normally take Gypsy's coat off once she is off lead....reckon she keeps herself warm enough bombing around everywhere, i put it back on once she is back on lead........however its damn freezing out there this morning, and since there werent any other dogs to play with in the park i left it on...she was fine

I'm so glad someone asked this - have been in two minds about it all winter. My two chase each other a lot and last winter when they were pups they'd use the coats to catch each other and drag down to the ground. My current thinking is that they stay warm when running around, but I put their coats on to and from the park. I hadn't thought about their coats as potential hazards - but now that it's been mentioned - I think I'll stick to the way I'm doing it.

The other reason, I'm glad of this thread is Hely's signature... How awesome is that? Brought a smile to my face!

I dont run all mine in their coats because they just hate wearing them,they spend most of the time rolling about and grabbing them to get them off :b theres only noah that wants his coat/jumper on cause he feels the cold really fast and would end up screwed up on the spot shivering

Mine are walked in coats.

When I go outdoors I put my coat on so I am not cold, so the dogs have the same.

I would NEVER run them in coats no matter how secure there are made, I do not want accidents like broken bones.

Do atheletes run in coats no, do racehorses run in coats no but as soon as they stop they do put some form of cover on to keep the muscles warm

I don't really care whether people approve of my dogs wearing coats or not..it's all just opinion..

I wouldn't let my granny go out in this whether in a light jacket and i won't let my two elderly dogs( aged 12 and 13) go out without an extra layer, end of...

Please don't shoot me down in flames if I've got that wrong (picked the idea up somewhere and it stuck with me) but anyway I would no sooner take mine for a walk in cold/wet weather without a coat, than go out without a coat myself.

Mine wear coats for lead walking and mooching about off lead when it is freezing eg if we are walking in a nature reserve and they are walking a little ahead/ behind sniffing about. I take their coats off to run, though, especially if they are running together because they just drag them off each other. Also the coats get wet and filthy when they are running. The other thing is, if they have the coats on when running, 'they won't feel the benefit' when they stop running ( as me old Granny used to say. )

I never let mine run in their coats because they would get overheated and they insist on tearing through gorse and brambles- if they wear a coat I would worry about them getting tangled up and trapped.

But if it is a road walk or wet weather they usually wear their coats- they wouldnt enjoy it otherwise.

Normally i would do the same as you, coats on walking to the beach and off

when we got there until walking home in the rain or cold.

 

But at the moment i haven't seen snow like this for a long

time and the beach is so open the wind cuts you in half.....

so i've been leaving their cots on.

Ann do what you think is best for your girls,

my lurchers or a few of my greyhounds hardly wore coats at all

the greyhounds in the kennels don't wear coats when they are galloping or schooling

but each to there own i say
