Runnig Off Towards Other Dogs.

Toby has got himself a habit of running off full pelt (or pulling on the lead) to go and play with other dogs. He gives the other owners a bit of a fright with his speed but it means me running after him. Is it possible to knock this trait out of him and if so does anyone have and ideas.

At the dog classes they tell me to walk across the other side of the road and distract him which i dont see how that will work long term. He is doing brilliant at everything else.

Any help would be appreciated.

when my lot run to far i shout mums going this way by time i have turned there all back by my side

i do reward them

i have been lucky with my pups/dogs as i have always had one that is good on recall

i start them of on long lead in garden just calling them to me when they get it spot on then i try it out side of lead works for me

The dog training advice that you were given works brilliantly for me but.......you must practice, practice and practice consistently. Once you see any dog in view, preferably before your dog notices, tell it to sit and give it the 'watch me' command and reward with a tasty treat or sniff of a squeaky toy, making YOU more interesting than the other dog. You have to practice often and calmly, I find this is the big advantage of going most weeks to a training club.....it gives you the opportunity to practice. There is no shame in keeping your dog safely on a lead until you are certain you are in control and have good recall. :luck:

yeh, the girl I use has some really good ideas and is brilliant. She said exactly what you said about making the dog wanting to be with you more than with other dogs. Unfortunatly toby loves other dogs. It is just practice and im sure he will get there eventually. Its just frustrating because he loves to run but if theres any dogs around I feel as if I cant let him off. I want to race him but need this fixing first. He is only 9 months old so still young i guess

Hi again David

Have you started taking him to race meetings yet? You may find that if you do, it could help him get more used to socialising with other dogs. You won't be able to let him loose of course, but just walking him up and down, and mixing with all the other whippets, while you "correct" any anti-social traits he may display, could possibly work wonders.

The worry is of course that if he becomes fixated on other dogs, it will hinder his race training. The one thing that racers won't tolerate, is dogs that prefer to inter-act with other dogs in a race or trial, rather than concentrating on the lure!

Yep, thats what im worried about. Im not 100% sure how he would react. I think he may well learn lessons of the other dogs. Also I think he will see the lure as something to chase and go for that rather than interact with other dogs. It would be good if there was anyone available in the oxford area to set up a little track and get him sorted before he goes to a meet but im away tomorrow to kenya until the end of feb.
