River Rescue

We were walking the dogs this morning along the river when we spotted a heron on the water. As we got closer he didn't fly off and we realised he was totally stuck in the ice about 10 feet in from the bank

I know a man who runs a wildlife rescue so phoned him but he couldn't get there for another hour at least. So I took the dogs home, phoned RSPCA but they were not able to get there for even longer. Rang the council to see if they have a wildlife person but no luck. So in the end I went back & waited for the wildlife man to turn up. Two men from the council came down too & eventually between them they got the heron out with the help of waders, a BIG net & lots of hanging on to one another. It was really good of them all. The heron was not hurt but was quite stressed by now, he'd been there for at least 4 hours, probably a lot longer.

It turned out that his tail was frozen solid into a great big block of ice & he just couldn't get free.

So after a check up the heron was given the all clear, we had to cover his eyes up cos he was getting a bit too handy with that beak of his

Ignore the silly hat, it keeps my ears warm. And after spending almost 2 hours standing around the river bank it was the only bit of me that was warm :wacko:

Thats a brilliant photo....and Well done to You... :thumbsup: if you hadnt noticed him, Im sure he wouldnt be alive to tell the tale now.

We have a lot of herons round here...will check now on my walks...there arnt any frozen in the water like this...

The heron was taken back to the wildlife place & is being warmed up & fed for a couple of days, tomorrow is release day all being well so I'll go back to watch him fly off. Photos will follow

That was one of my main worries Sue, that some :rant: would come along & start throwing things at him or that a dog may try to get to him.

aww that's a nice story, good job you noticed him, he must've been scared.
