Pete my whippet raced a little as a youngster ( racing name 'For Pete's Sake') without any injury--he was slow but very enthusiastic !! He retains his enthusiasm when chasing squirrels or rabbits. Unfortunately he now nearly always returns from a series of chases very lame on his front left hand side. The vet has diagnosed soft tissue damage and given anti inflammatory medicine (Medacom) and advised 2 weeks rest. This overcomes the immediate problem but it returns the next time a bunny or two pop up in front of him. It is pretty clear to me that the tendon (I think) that runs up from the back of the knee up towards the shoulder is strained/being damaged in some way. The main area that swells and is painful is the first 2 inches or so above the knee joint.

I wondered if there was any advice anyone can give eg supporting the injured area when exercising or linaments or natural remedies to bring down the swelling etc.

Thanks very much in anticipation

Two weeks isn't nearly long enough for it to heal properly - should be six weeks. If the metacam hasn't reduced the swelling by the time you read this, get some epsom salts (manganese sulphate) and soak the leg five minutes at a time three times a day in a solution of 6 teaspoons to a pint multiplied to a depth that covers the swelling (you'll need to fill a bucket or similar to get the depth so you'll need a big pack of the stuff but it's not terribly expensive). Swelling should have disappeared in 36 hours but if not, think another vet would be a good idea. It could be in the wrist (not knee on front leg) and might need a better diagnosis. Is there a good greyhound vet near you?
