hi

anyone had a cruciate lig problem with their whippet my one was out on xmas day and just let a whine out following a run for the frisbee, held his rear leg up and i took him to the vet on thursday and he said it might be lig damage but cant be sure unless they sedate him , he is starting to try and put weight on it so i am not so sure , i think its maybe a small twist as he was not running fast or anything but i have given him anti inflam for a week then back to the vet who was quoting 1800 pounds for a rolls royce repair!!! also read on a vets website that most times the repair wont be noticable than if it was left alone , anywa just thought i would ask

my friends springer spaniel had an op for this a few months back.they do advise rest ,in fact caged rest for at least 6 weeks i believe.i know after the op her dog had a mad half hour in the garden and ended back in the vets for another op.its cost her a fortune (w00t)

thanks for the reply , from what i have read that can easily happen but i am not sure if it is the ligament or just a twist . i have tried to move the joint myself to see if it moves back and forth but no joy , hes is not in pain or anything so hope its not going to be an op

i think id rest him up for a while and see if theres any improvement from that. i think the price youve been quoted is a bit ott (w00t) traceys dog cos her 4 hundred and something for the first op and that included antibiotics etc etc and the second time it was less than that.

hi kevin,my whippet as ligarment damgaed on her wrist,my vet said she needed surgery, but i said i would like to see a orthopacdic vet first,my orthopacdic is hopeing scar tissue will heal around the damaged ligarment,it as been 5 weeks now and it is geting better.i hope this is helpfull.

Personally (after my experience in the last year with my pup who badly hurt her leg) I would rest her and see how she is after a week. If no joy, get a referral to see a physiotherapist as they specialists and will be ble to pinpoint the injury better than a vet.

They thought my pups was cruciate - but after seeing the physio she basically hit her knee-cap very badly and strained a ligament. A cruciate repair can easily cost nearer £3k for a specialist.

She did have xrays to just rule out anything else, but in the end her treatment was physio and massage and hydrotherapy

hi all . thanks for the replies they are very helpfull indeed , as i was going to try a physio as well , the vet did give both his legs a hard pull from the back but he said try the anti flam for a week , so i am hoping he has just sprained it , hes now trying to put weight on it though and is still happy as well i suppose thats a good sign , dont fancy paying huge fees like that if its not needed but fingers crossed

bloody hell!3 thousand pounds! (w00t) excuse me while i go faint! talk about licence to print money!

kevin if you lived nearer id say contact my daughter who races her dogs and she knows all the good racing injury vets round here as well as chiropracters, physiotherapists etc etc in fact most of the medical dog men concerned with injuries.

hi

well thats what i said but worse , i only live over the border about 20 mins from carlisle if you want to give me your daughters e mail i will contact her it would be good to see someone that deals with injuries like my dog, and thanks for the reply

Hi Kevin, welcome to K9  I've Pm'd a racer to ask her to recommend someone in your area. My own feeling is I'd be inclined to seek a second opinion from someone more experienced in this area before considering surgery.

I've heard mixed opinions about the benefit of repairing a cruciate ligament injury most of them being favoured towards either wait and see or leave to repair alone. Obviously only a vet will know if these are possible options in your dogs case as they're able to assess the extent of the injury.

Best wishes :luck:

Hi Kevin

My pup broke both bones in his right front leg on 23rd Sep. We took him to our own vet the next morning, (he was seen on the day of the accident by a local vet near the racing club :D

My vet said he could repair Colt's leg, but could not say if he could save his leg. We were gutted, we have had a 3 legged whippet in the 80's and he never coped well, back loss is better :) After a long talk my vet phoned East Neuk Vet Clinic , they are the best at orthopecid (sp) surgery. They took Colt on as you need to be refered by your own vet. Colts leg is fantastic, you cant even see a scar, he's still on cage rest, but out with us all in the livingroom,he's on the same walk as the other dogs, has been for a few weeks now. Colt's keeping both plates in his leg as he's a full time pet, but he goes back on the 14th next month for a final check up. Yes Colts operation and after care cost a few quid, but we have him for life.

For the best vet to help your dog , in my eye's it's East Neuk in Fife

Good Luck and I hope all is well soon :luck: :luck:

Izzy had cruciate damage earlier this year :( and I got some good advice on here.... look back on my topics/threads.

My vet was really good, we had her on some tablets (anti inflam I think) and she didn't walk far for months. I also put her on Glucosamine and was very careful with her. The best advice is don't rush.

Izzy slowly recovered after months and it is only recently that I have started letting her run off lead. She is now fine :D

Be patient and if your dog slowly progressess you may not need the operation, I would always seek a second opinion....

Good luck :luck: :luck:

Dolly tore her ligament when she was 8 months old the xray showed she had torn it so much that it had to be replaced by an artifical one. She had the op and after a long period of rest about 4 weeks we began lead walking slowly built it up until she was allowed off the lead. During this time we also took her to hyrotherapy once a week and put her on glucosamine. I have to say that the vets and the hydrotherapy did wonders and after the two months she was racing around as normal and you still cant tell the difference.
