i would like some opinions about the best handicap racing, we at east ayr race 2 ft lb at our open, some go yd lb or half yd lb , we find the races are closer what you think. phil.
yd ld is biased towards 18 to 22 lbs on the straights , just look at the jack cadman for instace all four finalists were between 17 and 19lbs, even when you go to 2ft
the 18 lb bitches can still win. I think 2ft per lb gives the closest finishes and it usually results in all finalists running off which seldom happens in yd per ld finals.
On the bends i think it should be yd and 1/2 per lb if you are 18 lbs or under, then yd per lb for the rest. I can here you all shouting that the bends are always won by the big dogs, but look at the light weights that have won supemes on the bends
with little trouble. Lauras Dream 20 lbs, kirby 20lbs, rag crazy, 21lds, mystical dancer 21lbs, dancing wind, 19lbs, ones a mystery, 22lbs, little madam, 21lbs,
bossey boots, 22lds. all big winners on the straights, yet still able to beat the beat on the bends as well.
it is clear that the handicap system is outdated and very unfair to most dogs over 24lds, but it is easy to implement so change is always regected. I would love to see any change in the system that resulted in all weight class winners feeling that they have half a chance in the run off. regardless to this i just love to see them run.
I personaly think we should have more scratch racing among the smaller dogs. Still have the weight classes up to 20lb up to 25lb etc but all the dogs in that particular weight class run off scratch. Makes for some good racing. Think about it the no limits dont give each other yards so I dont really know why the smaller ones do all the time. Just my opinion mind.
Just think about it - on the bends, double the distance of the straights & still running the same format & still small dogs get to win? Doesn't make sense to run 150yd at yd/lb does it? To me it doesn't anyway!
Like scotty says the worst of it is - people put a lot of hard work into getting sponsorship for big straight events, only for 2-3 dogs to drop out of the final coz they know they will be breaking their dogs heart to pull back any sort of yardage at yd/lb!
I know exactley what you mean Vicky about yards for pounds. It does seem as if a smaller dog will always win the final, occasionaly you might get a middleweight win but not very often. There should be more half a yard per pound finals give the larger dogs a chance once in a while. Im not saying all the time coz then you would have larger dogs winning all the time just occasionaly.
The only fair handicap is a time handicap but in my opinion that wont happen very often. We all want the finals to be run with all dogs taking part as it makes for better spectating but there is another point other than this thats the safety of the dogs. The bonus of having all the dogs closer together when the lure stops is that the smaller dogs wont get hit with a bigger dog coming in later. So even if you have the weight classes run at 1yd lb you could run the finals at 1/2yd lb it could be worth a try. I am not too keen on the handicap dogs running off scratch like the no limits as in my opinion you do need some kind of handicap for these dogs. And I do feel that with bitches being faster than dogs some events could have a sex allowance for the dogs to give them a chance of winning supreme.
THERE IS NO HEAVYWEIGHT DOGS AROUND LIKE THERE USED TO BE, SUCH AS INDIAN JOE,DEFINATLEY BLUE,FREEWHEELER,[bENDS] THATS THE PROBLEM. :b
I REMEMBER IT USED TO BE 1½ YARDS LB ON THE BENDS WHEN IT WAS CHANGED TO A 1 YARD/LB THE LIGHTWIEGHT DOGS JUST ACCEPTED IT. 8)
GRANTED ON THE STRAIGHTS SOMETHING SHOULD BE SORTED OUT TO SATISFY ALL WEIGHTS, BUT I AM QUITE HAPPY THE WAY IT IS[ IMO ] -_-
we will never please everyone, but at the same time we should be open to sugestions that might improve the sport. as long as all points raised are constuctive , they can only help. like john says the dogs have changed over time, so maybe we need to do the same
