Racing At Cheltenham

I'm a big fan of National Hunt racing, my Dad used to train a few horses of his own on a permit so I kind of grew up with it. So there I was this afternoon, on the sofa when I should have been ironing, glued to the racing.

My heart went out to the Paul Nicholls team who sadly lost two horses in fatal falls today, both were fancied runners in their races. I know some people view NH racing as cruel and I don't wish to start any sort of debate about that, I just feel so sorry for the stable lads and girls who will have the empty loose boxes to face, most dote on the horses they look after and work long hours for relatively low wages.

That's so sad - and very unusual really - especially two from one team - poor horses and poor people.

Must admit when I watch the Grand National every year I will them all round in one piece and hate to see any falllers. Im just so glad when they get up and continue on the race even if it is riderless.

Yesterday they have the cross country race and the winner slipped at the end and fell. They put screens around him and there was agreat big cheer from the crowd when he got to his feet. The jockey spoke to the commentators and said he slipped as he pulled him up and fell and that he'd just winded himself. He just rested for a few minutes and then was fine. It was the 4th time the horse had won this race.

They have to enjoy racing otherwise they just won't do it.

I missed yesterday's racing unfortunately, I love the cross country race, obviously to win the race 4 times so does the winner, great that he was just winded. I suppose Red Rum (showing my age a bit!) is the perfect example of a horse loving a particular race. I can't remember him having any particular form on any other course but he just loved the Grand National and excelled at it.

Rummy was my all time favourite....I have his figurine on the mantel piece :wub: and have met him twice.... :wub: :wub: he was wonderful... :thumbsup:
