Puppy With Unexplained Diarohea

Hi all,

Albie is now 12 weeks old (I will post pics of him as soon as I can get him to stay still). Anyway at 11 weeks he had a small bout of diarohea. So I straved him overnight and then gave him chicken and rice until all settled down. However within 48 hours the diarohea was back!!

He has had 1st vaccination and been wormed. He is eating well, drinking well and playing for england. He has been on same complete dry food since he was weaned. I supervise him most of the time and when I can't, he is crated. I have taken him to the vet and he has no temperature and his stomach feels normal. The vet has given him antibiotics in case he has a bug. Iv'e got a paste to give him to thicken things up and he is on a chicken and rice diet for 5 days.

My question is could his gut be lacking in something and that is why his poo is so runny? i.e bacteria? I read somewhere that giving some bio yoghurt is good for whippets.

He is well in every other way and over 5kg is putting on weight well. Also my other whippet well.

Yes a spoonful of Natural Live Yoghurt morning & night does wonders. All mine have it every day :thumbsup:
 
Personally I would take him off complete food and start giving him a natural diet. Gradual change of course.

Could you elaborate on the natural diet? My 7 month old pup has had tummy problems and the vet has recommended dry food. My other dog, a lurcher, has been on a mixture of dry and cooked food for years and she is doing marvelously. But, what sort of food do you give your dogs? I am always interested in new food for her, as she is SUCH a foodie! Also, I think dry food is SO sad.
 
Well he has now been on a diet of chicken and rice for 3 days and his diarohea has stopped. I've got to go back to vets on wednesday as he is due for 2nd vaccination so I will mention about a natural diet and see if this would help him.

I have always been recommended a complete dry diet by breeders I have used and none of my other dogs have had any problems on just a dry diet. Still maybe he needs something else.
 
Sid is now 3 and has always had a sensitive tummy :x . I give him live yoghurt every day plus aloe vera juice once a day. Feed him on Burns chicken & rice which is a dry food and suits him. I am sure Albie will be fine. :thumbsup:

Well I am one of those who do not like complete foods for dogs i am afraid. I don't quite go down the full BARF route but I do feed raw meat, tripe, fish, and a little biscuit. Basically I feed the diet I fed my dogs 40 years ago before complete foods were invented. There are people on here who are more knowledgable than me about a natural diet, though. I am afraid vets always recommend complete feeds but usually the only nutritonal training they have is usually taught to them by the complete food producers. If you wish I'll pm you a copy of the diet I have been feeding my pup since she was 8 weeks. Touch wood she has never had a tummy upset.

The strange thing is that Albie has been on a dry food plus tinned meat since he was weaned and has only just got this problem a week ago. Surly if it was food to blame he would have reacted straight away.

I complete agree that some commercial dog fods are full of stuff that dogs wouldn't normally eat. I have never been recommended a food by a vet. The food I feed was used by a reputable breeder.The food is a natural dry dog food. It does not contain any preservatives, additives or colourings. It is vitalin puppy plus. My older dog is fed the same but for fussy eaters. She has never had a problem with upset tummys.

I think I will talk to the vet about giving him live yoghurt in the hope that it boasts his own natural bacteria. Even when he is on chicken and rice his poo has been fairly soft.

I always thought that vets recommend dry food because they think that if you start making up the food, your food might be lacking in some vitamings or nutrients, or it might have less fibre or protein that it is desirable. Lotte has been on fresh food for years, she loves brocoli, carrots, peas, even sweet corn for roughage, and of course chicken, red meat and fish. I gave her a chicken wing once though... she din't know what to do with it, so I threw it in the pot. She is 11 and a real athlete so the food is obviously giving her enough energy. I suppose a puppy is another thing altogether, as they need more protein and vitamins to build their bodies up...
 
be good to see what and how you feed yours so if you could post it im sure it would be helpful :thumbsup:

i found brown rice upset 2 of mines tummys :wacko: ??? white rice they are fine on , i have chicken frames with pasta or rice boiled down and red mills tracker, if in heavy work they get red mills racer , these are designed to be fed with meat and additions :thumbsup:
 
:) Hi Rum, if he's just been wormed and vaccinated this can cause their little stomach to sometimes be upset. I have two brothers. one gets quite ill after his yearly booster and worming but the other one is fine with both, so Trent only gets a booster every other year, Just another thing to think about. :- " Hope the little one gets well soon, :thumbsup: Diane.
 
He was vaccinated at 9 weeks and wormed at 10 weeks. I did think that maybe this contributed to his problem.

Trouble is he doesn't appear ill. The little toad has run rings round his older playmate today. He is so full of engery and is very alert.

Still he comes off all antibioticx on wednesday and is back to his usual food by thursday. I will wait with baited breath as to what comes out the other end.
 
Hi, Wont comment on the food issue except to say FRESH IS BEST, but i would just add make sure your puppy is 100% well before having a 2nd vaccination it would be better to wait another week than to further compromise the immune system of an even slightly unwell puppy. SOME ANTIBIOTICS ALSO CAUSE A RUNNY TUMMY :thumbsup:

THE YOUGHURT ROUTE WOULD BE GOOD TO DO ESP AS HE IS ON AB,S

I agree with giving yoghurt particularly after a course of antibiotics. However, I wouldn't advise this whilst his stomach is still upset as milk products can make it worse. :thumbsup:

I was reading down this topic,& was thinking the same thing......

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES VACCINATE A PUPPY THAT ISN'T 110% WELL OR YOU COULD VERY WELL END UP WITH A VERY POORLY PUP,OR WORSE!!!
 
The first thing I give my dogs if they get upset tummy is some yogurt. It will not hurt, whatever is in milk that can upset dogs' stomach gets converted into something else during the process which creates yogurt. There are several different infection which can make pups' stomachs upset and it is best to see your vet to get something to stop the runs. As irritated stomach/gut can make the pup more susceptible to other more serious infections. Make sure there is no plant or something else in your yard the pup could be eating that could make his tummy upset.

There is no such a thing as "natural kibble" it is all just abattoir refuse, cooked into paste, dried into powder with all sorts of addictives put in. If it did not have preservatives it would go off. :)

Just what I was thinking debs . Mind you if her vet is any good he wont doi 2nd vac anyway . If he does (w00t) , change your vet asap

I have taken on board everything that you all have said and it has been very helpful.

I must just say that Albie was on the dry complete food for 6 weeks before he had any problems and when I said it was a natural product, I meant that the stuff in it comes from natural sources, not man made. I do agree that fresh is best. The food was what he had been on and I didn't want to change it until he had fully settled in. Also he had runny poo before he was put on antibiotics. The vet put him on this to rule out any infection. He doesn't appear ill, quite the opposite in fact. It is a complete mystery as to why this should happen. He is eating like a horse, drinking well, playing all the time. I don't let him go in the garden unsupervised, so I know he hasn't eaten anything bad. In the house if I can't watch him he is crated.

The good thing is that his stools are now back to normal and have been for a few days. I am still keeping up with the fresh chicken and rice though.

I am due to see my vet tomorrow. He is fab and I have been using him since I first got a pet some 15 years ago. He wouldn't give him another vaccine if he thought there was any chance of making him worse.

Anyway thanks again for all your thoughts
