Puppy Training Classes

Hi all, thank you for you advice on questions to ask the breeder when collecting a puppy. We are collecting her this weekend and are so excited.

Can anyone recommend the optimal age to start puppy training classes? I would assume after atleast a few months?

She is a dachsund, age 11 weeks old.

She can start training classes as soon as she's had all her vaccinations! And it's never too early to start on the basics, like sit, down, stay, etc. (though remember she's a baby and has the attention span of a gnat).

You need to find a good training class, though - one that is 100% positive, and - very importantly - won't push the pups into overwhelming social situations but will respect those that are a little nervous round other dogs. The last thing you want is a class where all the puppies are allowed to play in a free-for-all regardless of size or personality.

I suggest asking if you can go along to a few without your puppy, just to observe. If they are good they shouldn't have a problem. Dogs Trust is getting great reviews for their classes if you can find one. Otherwise look for phrases like force free and reward based. Avoid anyone who talks about dominance, alpha or pack theory. Observe what temperament of pup you’ve got. Like humans, they can have different dispositions, and a group setting could be quite overwhelming for one pup, while another may thoroughly enjoy it. There’s a lot of basic training you can do yourself, lots of helpful info on the internet from wellknown, reputable dog trainers. At that age, meeting other dogs and people is more about ensuring good socialisation, I feel..

Very true... If I could go back now, I would still have taken Jasper to his training classes, but I'd have left halfway through each session as by then his brain was beginning to fry... Never be afraid to do what you think is right for your dog.
