We are enjoying the fruits of our labours with Jacques at last. Since having the dog behaviourist in, we are now concentrating on getting his attention (and keeping it) in the home, with rewards for obedience. We have stopped taking him out for walks/runs, instead giving him one to one exercise play in front and back gardens. Jacques seems much more relaxed and very content. We were obviously asking him to do more than he could manage by taking him out but of course we are working towards building his confidence to be able to resume this daily delight!

Our next step is to divide his meals into 2 med size ones, followed by 2 smaller ones 2-3 hours later. ie meat/veg then 2-3 hours later 1ox carbs ie potato/pasta/rice. Apparently the carbs fed separately maximises the calming effect the serotonin gives from the processing of the carbs. Today is day 1 so we will see how the 7-10 days go...

Training however should be done following the protein meals and not the carb.

Would a general vitamin B6 be OK to add to this or is there one specifically for dogs?

Practical Diet Manipulation

From a behavioural point of view, increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain will assist in the treatment of a number of behavioural problems and aid in the learning of alternative or new behaviours.

Treatment should be as follows –

  • Two meals of an easily digested protein source, such as a lamb and rice complete food (morning and evening).
  • To each of these meals add Vitamin B6 (suggested dose 1mg/kg) It is essential for the health of your dog that only vitamin B6 is used and NOT a mixed vitamin B compound.
  • Approximately 3 hours after each of these meals feed a small saucer (amount dependant on the weight of the dog – approximately 2oz for an average Labrador) of pure carbohydrate eg boiled potatoes or boiled white pasta.

It is recommended that a dog should remain on this regime for up to three months, during which time other behavioural and training exercises should be undertaken, to allow sufficient time for new responses to be fully learned.

Signs of improvement can often be seen within 7-10 days of beginning the diet manipulation.

The use of this diet must be discussed with your vet before you go ahead and try it with your dog.

37 views and no comments so obviously nothing useful to add to my post.

Sufficient to say we have not seen much fruit to this type of feeding as Jacques wolfs his meat/veg down but won't touch the pasta/rice/potato two hours later.
