Hi there, I’m new to this forum, my cross lab/springer has been in season for 3 weeks, she is a prolonged bleeder, but this season she has had two clots and is still producing discharge but only once or twice a day.we lost our cat of 21 years in august 2022, and Bailey has spent her whole life with him and this is her first season since he died. She is 10 and a half she has no other symptoms and seems completely normal. Please if someone could give me some advice I would be very grateful.

I don't have experience of bitches but is anyone else worried about pyometra?

I have never experienced Pyometra so can not comment. I have had entire bitches for 56 years. There has been at times the occasional girl who's season has gone on for four weeks but never as a regular thing and I certainly did not worry.
Of course there are vets who like to get us worried about the word "Pyometra", and let's spay as a precaution, £££!
Keep an eye on her and watch the vulva for any signs of puss, If she shows any sign of being poorly then obviously a quick visit to the vet for a check would be advisable.

I too have kept whole bitches for many years and agree entirely with Excuseme. Like us, bitches vary in their cycles. While we should always be aware of pyo, it isn't as prevalent as we are persuaded to think, and none of my own bitches ever developed it. My own vet who has a lot of experience with his own dogs and puppies is very relaxed about bitches and seasons.

Thank you all for your replies, it good to know that many dog owners have never had there bitches spayed and has never experienced pyometra. I’m keeping a very close eye on Bailey at the moment and if she becomes unwell or develops pus I will take her straight to the vet. The trouble is they make out that pyometra is prevalent and it scares the life out of me every time she has a season. Anyway thank you once again
