Hi guys, sorry not to have posted here in forever and apologies for the gross nature of this post ... don't read on if you're eating :x

The post title says it all. We've tried most of the generally advised things, the boys are rarely outside alone when toileting, but Griff, who has always had leanings in this direction, is now dashing in and literally eating the poo as it exits the other dogs bums ... it doesn't even have chance to hit the ground  And this despite having one or the other of us right behind him commanding 'Leave'. Trouble is he can get to the pooing dog quicker than we can get to him. The antics that take place in our garden two or three times each day are probably hilarious to watch but apart from the health aspects of this it's beginning to worry the other dogs (and us when he emits toxic farts all evening) and a couple are starting to copy him.

Their diet - because I know that's relevant - roughly 50% raw (green tripe, lambs hearts etc.), about 25% kibble (Skinners Field and Trial Duck and Rice), and 25% from tinned sardines, scrambled eggs, goats yoghurt, cottage cheese, cooked veg, Nature Diet (varies through the week). They're also supplemented with various herb mixes from CSJ etc. and Evening Primrose Oil capsules. And in Griff's case anything else he can scavenge.

All suggestions gratefully received :))

Hi This topic comes up from time to time :D ;) :x

Everything that can be tried has been tried. If someone could invent a cure for this habit they would probably be rich indeed.

I have found that 6 months wearing a racing muzzle at times of opportunity works best. They soon get used to wearing one.

Is it only the poo of your own dogs that he eats ? Many dogs are not too fussy :( :x

If you want to try something less drastic first, (much as I hate the things and think they are dangerous) you could try him on an extending lead.

Pull him sharply away with a leave comand as soon as he is about to eat the poo. It may work for your dog, it may not.

Some people believe that adding pineapple to the diet of the dogs whose poo is being eaten makes if off putting.

I have never had any luck with pineapple only a muzzle seems to work.

Good luck :luck: :x

I wish I knew the cure as well. The greyhound is dreadful, she will whip round and eat her own if she knows you are not watching, revolting dog. Zennor is a rush up behind who ever is pooing dog, he came in yesterday with poo on his head!!!!!!! I tried a water pistol which works to a degree, in Zennor's case he just ignores it, the greyhound hates water so will leave it.

I have tried the pills you can buy that claim to stop it, no good. pineapple, no good, shredded raw courgettes, no good. Putting chilli powder on the ppo, works but it gets a bit costly!!!!!!!!

Can't help. lol

Tin pineapple works on my dog's  the fresh pineapple as well and they enjoy it

Commiserations. I have two who poo eat and it wouldn't be quite so bad if it was their own or each others - at least I know they're healthy and wormed. However it is everyone elses and it doesn't seem to matter how old it is :x I've tried various things without success and have resorted to muzzling them when out (and they still somet  imes manage to dunk the muzzles in the offending material). I do remove muzzles for the beach walks which involve lots of ball and frisbee throwing so muzzles obviously spoil the game. However, last week the two little sods must have crunched some dead crabs or something equally delightful and one threw up in the back of the car over a pile of waterproof coats and the other had the squits overnight. Sincere apologies to those reading this with a delicate disposition.

Sorry to say the posts so far have really made me laugh!

Seriously, since acquiring Jacques at 5 months old, he always made a bee-line for Sam's rear end, when they were empting out. For nearly two and half years it drove us mad with someone having to keep guard over Sam whilst he "performed" to stop Jacques from getting at it.

We had our own theories. Like; Jacques sensed Sam was sick and would eat his poo to prevent predators coming in and attacking him. That something in Sam's poo (with all his meds etc) made it smell/taste good. Lastly, that Jacques wanted to be "top dog" and by doing this, he was behaving like a bitch when she eats her puppies poo. Sort of protection coupled with cleanliness!

Sadly, we lost our dear old Sam 4 weeks ago so we haven't have a bit of bother since. Instead of that we are having other problems with Jacques - see another post of mine!

Condolences to you. I know just how frustrating and sickening (hic) this habit is. Wish I could help further. Keep your chin up!

Sadie x

My lot stopped mutual poo appreciation after I swapped them onto Burgess lamb & rice.

I mix this with a little chumm in gravy to make it more palitable.

May just be good luck that mine have given up the habbit, but perhaps worth a try. Statistically, I would be interested if you get a result.

I should add that they still have interest in some poo left by other dogs but the situation is very much improved.

Looking at what they get fed, I can see how it could prove tasty. I'm tempted myself (w00t)

Various of mine have done this from time to time, but a good yelling seemed to do the trick eventually :)

Penny does this when out and about, it is the most disgusting habit but she is very selective about what poo she eats :x She wont eat her own though, it is horrible when I see her speed up and then start munching!!
