Hi everyone. I’m brand new to this site.
I, like another poster, should have picked up my pup 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately my breeders family are all self employed and have not been able to benefit from the governments help yet. They are now suffering because of lack of money and have 7 pups, plus Mum and grandmother to feed. Costing a fortune. I suspect the fee for the pups would help them out a great deal. I have PPE and have worked out a way to have less contact than I would in the supermarket. Should I get her? Can I add I am wracked with guilt whatever I do. I have kept to all government guidelines and intend to stay at home otherwise .

No. It has been made very clear that picking up or delivering a puppy is non essential travel.

Another way to look at it is to consider the strain it would add to the services if you were involved in a traffic accident en route. I know none of us expect that, but it is one of the reasons non essential travel is prohibited.

Don't feel guilty - you have no choice in this matter, and there will be many other people dealing with extreme hardship right now. Hopefully they can keep going till they get financial help.

What you could do is tot up all the extra costs they have for your one pup - food, worming... I was going to say vaccinations but I imagine they can't get them done - and when you are able to collect your pup, add that to what you pay (they may ask for this anyway, which would be reasonable).

Yes I know, I feel bad just even thinking of going. I don’t really want to leave my house tbh. I guess it’s inevitable that the pup will be at least 4 -5 months old before we get her.
I feel for the breeder still. 7 pups and 2 dogs. God help them !

Thanks JudyN, a good idea.

Will the breeder be socialising the puppies? There is a period that only lasts up to the age of 16 weeks, when the experiences they have will impact on their whole lives. I don't know how experienced your breeder is obviously but it is really important for the puppies to see and hear a range of different things, and to be worked with separately from their litter mates.

Maybe in exchange for offering the extra costs as JudyN suggests, you could ask them to send you pup updates, videos, pics etc of her growth and progress? So it will hopefully feel mutually beneficial in these very unusual times. At least you'll kind of be getting to know her albeit remotely...

Yes they are very good at sending videos and pics. I spoke to her today and she is trying to socialise them . Luckily as husband and sons are out of work they are helping. So I’m lucky really . I’m a bit worried about something called litter mentality though which may make things very difficult when we finally get her.
