Is it possible to teach a whippet to retrieve rabbits once it has caught them?

yes it is , they are perfectly capable of bringing back live to hand too

what type of training have you done so far?

I haven't got a whippet at the moment but may get a working type shortly. What sort of training do you use? Same as a gundog?

im sure others will add their ways but the way i start mine is from early age ( after vaccs) i begin general basic obedience, most of my pups i keep back at walking at heel off lead very well at 12 weeks, emma my latest little bitch has never walked away from heel, however she is coming up 19 weeks and is feeling her feet a little  small toys retrieved are all early training , little and often with plenty of praise

Yes whippets do retrieve & the best age to start training is as soon as you get 1 screw a piece of paper in to a ball go in the hall or a entry/passageway flick the paper ball away from the pup when its picks up the paper ball call the pup back then give the pup loads of praise do it about 4-5 times then leave it for another night & repeat don't do it in open spaces as the pup will run off with the ball.
