I wish to start a new competition in Whippet News for club dogs...

Whippet News Club Dog of the Year

I need some ideas for rules the competition, how to score each week (all this needs to be kept as simple as possible, ie; points for winning and subsequent placings.

Should the competition be run when the opens are on, from March until October, or all year?

Should champions be excluded from scoring?

Should any open winners be excluded from scoring?

Would your club like to take part?

Club secretaries could let me know if they have any ideas on this.

A trophy and jacket will be presented to the eventual annual winner, we will need something in place in case of a 'tie' on points between several dogs...any ideas please put them on here for discussion, thank you.

sounds like a good idea,

maybe limit set a maximum number of opens/champs a club dog can have run at to be elegible

This is something I'd considered myself, then given up on due to the complications!

Different clubs run different amounts of club meetings, therefore points gained would vary enormously from club to club. Also, some clubs run to a regular pre-set programme and others just make up races and trials on the day, depending on who turns up.

And at the risk of seeming paranoid, this makes any results sent to you very much open to conjecture - it wouldn't be entirely unexpected to think that some results may be "engineered" if there is something to be gained!

The difference with Open and Champs results is the amount of "witnesses" to the actual results.

Kudos to you for thinking about this, and although personally I don't think it can work, if there is anything I can do to help, just ask.

i agree in part with Ian, at Oxford this year we have had very little club running, where as other clubs run almost every week.

It's a very nice idea but not sure how workable it really is
