Our New Whippet Pup Kiah

Kiah is our first whippet and has settled in really well in the 10 days we have had her. She is now 8 weeks old.

Only problem we have is our dachund/collie cross, who is 11, hasnt taken to her (yet) - he has had a go a couple of times and we have to keep them apart when she is in a playfull mood - any advice appreciated.

The older one is just showing who the boss is...I don't think you should separate them, just let them get on with it UNLESS any aggression starts then stop them.

The pup needs to learn boundries and the older one will deffenatly teach them :thumbsup:

Just be patient and they will eventualy get on.

My older one is almost 3 and the pup has just turned 14 weeks and they still have little spats but its nothing to worry about.

Trouble is Monty, our older dog, really had a go at her the other day leaving Kiah with bites near her eye and on her ear. This happened in a split second and resulted in a trip to the vets and some anti-biotics and steroid jab - it was quite nasty.

We are now a bit over paranoid about it as we dont want it to happen again.

So now we are trying to get them introduced gently - he seems to be OK with her when she is not jumping around and playfull so its perhaps just the age difference - he wants to keep his quiet life probably!

Poor Kiah, poor Monty and poor you, hope the situation improves soon. But really, what are these Vets like, I can understand the ABs at a pinch, but unless it was a really serious bite they shouldn't be necessary, but A STEROID injection???? (w00t) What on earth for???

is there a 'chill out' zone where he can get away from the noisy newcomer? if he has his own space where shes not allowed it may help. another tip is that when you can see shes getting a bit carried away, tell her off before he snaps at her. that will help her see her 'place' and reassure him of his. you, as pack leader, have a duty to both dogs, and by putting kiah first (at least in both dogs eyes) you are demoting him, which will cause him to feel resentful and insecure, and kiah on the other hand will feel cocky, which may well lead to her going out of her way to annoy him for the sheer fun of rubbing his nose in it. by setting boundaries like this, he'll feel less threatened, making him more likely to take a relaxed attitude.

i have to say, though, she is GORGEOUS :wub: good luck with your new baby :luck:

He said it was to keep any likely swelling of the eyelids down - it was quite a nasty bite both above and below the eye. I agree with you though, it was probably unnecessary. The AB were probably just precautionary but I do think vets "over prescribe" - a bit like our doctors do.

Your probably right Keith but the breeder said she was ready at 7 weeks when we collected her - she has settled in fine apart from the skirmishes with Monty - eating well, sleeping well and rarely does her business anywhere but the lawn.

The bites have all but cleared up now anyway - we had her checked over today whilst having her 1st jab - wounds must heal quickly with pups.

awwwwwwww she really sweet :wub: :wub: if you had her 10 ten days and now she 8 weeks that means she was 6 weeks 4 days old,which is too young to leave her mother,i never have a puppy until at least 8 weeks,regardless whether the breeder thinks they are ready to go.

your other dog is 11 and i persumed has only been the only dog,so it could be part of that.

anyway i hope things gets better :luck: and keep us updated of her progress and lots of piccys :thumbsup: :thumbsup: she a very pretty young lady :wub: :wub: o o

Just to clear up her age though she is 8 weeks and 4 days old today - she was exactly 7 weeks old the day we collected her.

Hi Dave perhaps i was a little abrupt with my views as to the age of your pup leaving its mother, but before i bought my whippet bitch, i did a bit of research, ive always had dogs so im not entirely thick, but the thing is, i was led to believe that a pup needs to be with mother till at least 8 weeks old, [bonding] they learn an awful lot from mum, how to behave, toilet training, the beginnings anyway, plus the mothers goodness from her milk, never the less you have a lovely little dog there so good with her

I have to agree with Keith...I think a pup should stay with mum until its 8 weeks old.

Inca bit Dippy on the face (and still does) and left a few marks in the first week and has left scars...

Puppies learn quickly and will learn that your older one is the boss...

What a beautiful little girl Kiah is. I agree with what others have said regarding the age a pup should leave its mum. It's not your fault though, I am sure you took the breeders word for it but the bitch does alot more than just feed her pups. Besides Kiah was probably already weaned before she went to you. A bitch will single out every one of her pups & regulary give the a 'hiding'. It looks awful but I never stopped my girls from doing it because I figure mum knows best. She never really hurt them but it teaches the pups their place, it's important that they respect the older dogs & know when to 'submit' for their own safety. They cant just go barge-arsing around jumping on dogs & giving them the irrits. There's probably a good chance your little girl never experienced this lesson & is now copping it from your older dog. Hopefully she will learn to read the signs & steer clear of him.

Good luck with your new pup, hopefully these teething troubles will iron out. Make sure you make more of a fuss of the older dog, so she doesn't feel like she is being pushed out by the newcomer. It's probably a bit harder when the old dog actually is quite old and set in its ways. I've been very lucky, Chloe excepted Frankie like he had always been here and the two of them took to Holly immediately and now she's the boss!! :lol:
