Myself and my wife are not sure whether to leave our cocker spaniels crate door open at night , part of me never wanted him in a crate long term but I feel it’s nice for him to have a safe place to relax and sleep .
He gets let out in the morning and he stays out until bedtime whether we have to go out or not , he usually sleeps on the sofa or on his other bed in the living room when we go out but he will never go and sleep in his crate .

I agree. Sometimes what we think is comfortable isn't the same to the dog.

Yep, I agree with both of the above. He can still choose to sleep in the crate if it's left open, if he feels it's his safe relaxing place...
