Some may have seen that i posted up a found add for a found dog.

At present no one has come forward for her so we are still looking after her untill someone does.. or till the warden signs her over to us.

We currently have 2 Huskies, 2 Dobermans, 2 cats and a certification of insanity! The whippet (stilll nameless) is a welcome and well behaved addition to the herd. (god knows what thsi will be like when we add kids to the mix!!)

the girlie we have, shes from what you all tell me and i read about them is a damn cheeky thing. Has worked out how to get under our covers at night and has a knack of collecting all the cuddly toys in the house and putting them in her bed.

Our other dogs are hard wearing.. we leave them in the kennels and they are fine, the Whippet obviously is not as hardy and as a breed i know nothing about.

So.. ladies and gentlemen start your engines and tell me everything i need to know.

Whippet girls are cheeky, needy and greedy! Yes, they are not very hardy and she will need a jacket - sometimes for no other reason than to stop members of the public telling you how cold and trembly she is! (whippets often tremble because they are excited or slightly apprehensive, but people will keep telling you they are cold). They look beautiful running - like a little a horse - and nothing will give you more pleasure than watching her run really fast! Whippets can be terrible chewers - mine too has toys, but they are missing ears, legs, etc. - so if you have kids be sure to keep their toys safe. My Ivy had my little girl's new Barbie over Christmas - 'oh, look! Ivy has some legs in her bed!' They are terrible thieves and will steal food out of your hands while you are eating it, but they are (generally) gentle dogs and, despite their powerful teeth, rarely bite people.

This is all I've learnt in about a year of owning one - no doubt others will be able to tell you a lot more!

One thing to add..

The first night she was with us she pee'd on the carpet. In the pee there was some blood.

since then we didnt see any more in other puddles on the carpet but today when i took her out she pee'd and saw blood coming out.

I will take her to the vet tomorrow once i get back from a solicitors appointment but is there anything i could do in the mean time to help her. she dosnt seem to be in any pain when she wees or otherwise. just happy contended dog.

She is very well mannered.. sits and dosnt pay any attention to us when we are eating.. but yes.. our hoover power lead is now in 3 peices and our carpet in our front room is missing part of it! This was on her first day/night and has been good since though.

she might have a urinary tract infection or might have been hit by a car before you picked her up.

Congratulations on your new family member! She sounds adorable, and I'm not at all surprised that she has already found her way under your bedcovers. Expect her to have taken over the whole bed by next week :D

One thing I would add to what everyone else has said is that their psychology is different from other dogs in that they are chasers, and if they see something exciting in the distance they are inclined to take off after it, regardless of what obstacles are in the way. So assume a lack of traffic sense and a possibly less than perfect recall. I remember reading that having one out on a balcony isn't a great idea, for example, because if they see a cat in the next garden they can just take off (literally!) Ditto cliff tops.

You'll have a lovely time with her, whippets are huge fun and very cuddly. Just don't expect anything on the kitchen counters to be safe.

I totally agree with this - unlike your other dogs who will have some common sense (!) whippets are very prey driven and if they see something (could be a leaf!) they will just run to get it and will not notice canals, roads, cliffs, quarries etc. For this reason I only let mine off in proper dogs parks and will let them on the beach when I eventually get there. All sight hounds are the same - we had an afghan who also just RAN if he was off lead. They go deaf when this happens! My two have excellent recall in the dog parks and at training but I know if they saw a rabbit I'd have no chance of getting them back. My husband's aunt also had a whippet years ago who decided to take a short cut when she called him for dinner. The whippet was in the attic room, aunt in the kitchen......whippet came through open 2nd floor window and landed outside!!!! Luckily not killed but ended up tripod, poor thing.

Other than than that, whippets are loving, loyal, endearing and entertaining. I don't think we'd have another breed now.... except another mad sighthound perhaps. Your girl seems to have landed on her feet - I hope you get to keep her! :)

nothing to add just hope you get to keep her I am reading all this with interest as hope to have my own soon

:luck: good luck with her and well done for offering her a home  , it might be worth getting the vet to take alook, just incase she has been in season....otherwise you could be expecting a litter of "unknowns"

she looks really contented, she's certainly landed on her feet good on you for taking her on

oh god! puppies.. *weeps*

My poor house..!!!!

Yup.. tried to take her to the vets today but they were solid. Will take her on Monday.

She seems in no pain and its not like her pee is red its more like shes passing clots. Her lady parts dont seem swollen or looks like she may be in heat so no idea really.

This morning i woke up to find her not just on my bed.. but under the covers with her head on my pillow! She had half the bed and me and my partner had the other half! for such a small dog she takes up alot of space!

Well, you now know that you have a completely normal whippet

And yes, they have an amazing ability to stretch out and fill a double bed up just on their own :teehee:

Good luck at the vet on Monday, I hope it is just a minor infection which will clear up with anti-biotics.

Makes you wonder if this is why the poor little girlie found herself homeless  :(
