Odd few days...greedy dog off her food!

Rox has been so weird this week, she's been off her food!
It started on Monday morning, she ate most of her breakfast then left about a quarter of it then wouldn't eat her dinner. Tuesday the same, ate some breakfast then wouldn't eat her dinner. Wednesday she ate most of her breakfast, left a bit then actually did eat all her dinner. Today she wasn't keen on eating breakfast, I put the bowl down and she sniffed it then went to bed, she ate a bit out of her bed but wouldn't get up to eat from her bowl, she did eat it eventually but it took some persuasion!
This is not the Roxy we know, normally she eats absolutely anything and everything! And is a hyper and active girl, but this week she's been rather quiet.
I've contacted the vets and we've got an appointment for today, I hope it's nothing awful! She's only 7!!

Okay so we went to the vet and she was concerned about her heart! Right away i was worried because she spent ages listening to it and then got another vet to listen. She now has a grade 4-5 heart murmur (the vet said it kept changing from 4 to 5) and we've been referred to see a cardiologist next week!
So unexpected and I just hope it's just the heart murmur we have to worry about, not anything serious going on in there. Or if there is something else I hope it can be managed with medication.
Very worried right now because she's only 7 and just the fact that it's her heart makes it seem serious. Although my friends who work at vet practices have both reassured me that dogs can live great lives on heart medications. We'll see next week what is going on with my girl! Fingers and paws crossed!
 
Just a heads up - heart meds can make dogs wee uncontrollably until they get the dosage fine tuned so expect accidents. But it's a small side effect for a helpful medication - floors can be cleaned. And it usually stops when they get the right level of drugs.
 
Okay thanks for that, yeah exactly, I don't mind extra cleaning, as long as she's okay!
 
Good luck with this- every dog is different I know but we had an old boy who lived many happy years with a heart murmur.

Awww thank you that is reassuring!
I did know about it since she was a puppy but it was never graded, therefore it must have not been bad and has now gotten worse. It's kinda annoying to have to wait almost a week to find out what can be done but at the same time I'm really nervous about what they might find! I guess she's not from the best breeding stock as she has the heart murmur and skin allergies which may have been passed down.
 
Oh dear - not what we wanted to hear. My elderly King Charles did very well on heart medication and that was a long time ago. Treatments will have improved a lot since then as well I'm sure.
 
Aw poor Roxie @Jack-Russell-Lover but at least you know the reason why she wasn’t eating and can move forward I’m the correct way.

Thanks @Josie she's been herself again since Thursday night so I'm hoping it's nothing too serious.
 
Yes, sorry I forgot to post an update!
So we went to the cardiologist who was a very nice guy, knew his stuff and knew what it was just from listening to her heart through a stethoscope.
He said it's her PDA that didn't close up when she was born, this is a blood vessel that instead of taking blood to the lungs takes it around the body, it is usually only open when in the womb as we don't need our lungs when in there. But in her case it hasn't closed.
He said that what often happens with it is that the heart enlarges and if hers was then she'd need a surgery costing a few grand.
The good news is that her heart was normally sized and it is such a small opening that it shouldn't impact on her life at all, she doesn't need medication and she can enjoy walks as normal! :) So very good news and very chuffed! :D
 
Is she eating again? Was the heart murmur the cause of her not eating? Seems an unusual symptom. Perhaps she just felt generally unwell due to the hot weather?
