Hi

This morning my 13 year old whippet Badger had a nose bleed...just from one nostril and I managed to stop it by applying a cold compress to the bridge of his nose...but it has given me a bit of a scare...I rang the vets but they said obviously if its stopped, to just keep an eye on things but that it could just be a small broken blood vessel from a sneeze or a slight increase in blood pressure where he has been laying in the sun..

Anyone have any experience of this kind of thing? Badger ate his breakfast and had a walk first thing but has just been laying around apart from that.

I wanted to take him for another short walk into town but I'm a bit scared to incase it bleeds again

Poor Badger, hope that the bleeding doesn't come back. :luck:

Do you think perhaps he could have bumped his nose when you weren't in the room or in the garden ? The only experience I have of doggy nosebleeds was when little Jessi was 5mths old and she bumped into a tree stump hidden beside the path we were walking on. I used some ice in a little sandwich bag to stop the bleed and kept her quiet for a couple of hours.

Hi thanks for the reply...no he couldn't have hurt it, he has just been snoozing on his vetbed in the sun...but I did go to the front door to get the post and it's possible he sneezed perhaps and made it bleed..it was just one nostril that bled and the blood was very bright red and quite thin so I am assuming it was something irritated his nose, now that I've calmed down a bit LOL...he seems fine and I'm going to pop out without him now and then later i'll just take him out for a little one to one time..I love my one to one walks with each of my oldies.

Oh that's good news, I had visions of a poor old lad laid there streaming away  . Perhaps it's me going cuckoo after lack of sleep due to c-section puppies :sweating:

Sorry, don't mean to hijack this post but did someone say puppies? Just flicked back and there doesn't seem to be an announcement or pics.

Do hope Badger is none the worse for his nosebleed. :(

Blaze and her puppies are in Non-Peds. A bit sad now as the little dog just died not long ago this evening. He was weak when they were born and seemed to look promising but suddenly went downhill and despite best efforts he was gone within half an hour of looking like he was in distress.

Misty was having nose bleeds after having a big tooth out on Thursday. Somehow she had split the tooth. Probably eating a big jucy bone at some time in the past. Proved to be an expensive treat. As it happened, I did not need to use it as she stopped having the nose bleeds by the time I had her home and had gone out and bought a spray.

Vet told me to use a nasal decongestant spray (Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride) Boots Nasal decongestant spray). Badger will probably be fine. I do not know if you would be advised to use this if he has another nose bleed. If they continue, would check with vet.
