Last night I treated my lot to some raw chicken wings. They love 'em and I like the effects on their teeth. I've given my dogs raw chicken wings for over 6 years now with few problems. But

After cleaning up 5 piles of vomit this morning from at least 3 of my dogs Tally deehound, Mouse and Jest - dunno who did the pile in the garden - all with shards and small pieces of bone in I'm not going to feed them like that again.

It can't have been pleasant to up chuck those bits of bone. :(
 
Hi Beejay we stopped giving ours chicken wings ages ago for the same reason, Meg got one stuck in her throat, Luckily she managed to cough it up still in one piece. It could of choked her though so this put us off giving them.
 
I just don't believe this. I've just hurt my back opening a sack of Australian formula. I'm not doing too well on the dog feeding front at the mo. :(
 
the poor things :( hope they are ok.that why i don,t give them chicken wings anymore,i just not going to chance it.

I would also have to say that although I have read plenty of advice on here about the safe feeding of chicken wings, I would not give them to my dogs as it is so easy for them to get stuck in their throuts and also for the small chewed shards of bone to puncture the stomach. I do feed minced steak beef to my dogs along with their kibble and also lambs liver but have to say that after reading a post on here about a boxer called Cilla who died after eating raw mince meat I do stick anything I feed in the microwave for a couple of mins. I do feed raw marrow bones - I pour boiling water over them first to rid of any nasties and let them cool before feeding. I expect some will think I am being over fussy!
 
Have to say that I've never had a problem feeding mine raw chicken, but then they get it most mornings for breakfast - various sizes. As Neospora (the Cilla story) is a concern, mine get fed defrosted frozen chicken pieces and beef mince, as either freezing or cooking kills the neospora itself. I don't actually cook the meat.

Good tip about the marrow bones though! :thumbsup:

What do you think caused them to throw the wings back up?? :unsure: Glad to hear they're all OK though :huggles: As for the choking, I guess there is a risk with all foods, Alfie used to choke on kibble daily (when he used to eat it ;) ) as he didn't bother to chew it, whereas he always slowly munches down raw bones.

We were giving ours chicken wings at 7am for breakfast as part of the barf diet, the day Paula mentioned we had took Meg out in the late afternoon run her behind the drag lure a few times brought her home then about 8pm she started coughing and brought up a 2" peice of chicken wing bone with a very sharp edge (very sharp).

The thought of what this could of done to her insides had she got banged ect (and the cost of getting it put right had it happened) made us decide to stop feeding them to our dogs.

Glad your lot sufford no ill effects from their experiance.

:eek: wow again! I've never heard so many people on here 'owning up' to not giving their dogs raw bones - it just goes to prove that no one way of doing things is right, in fact it normally feels like we can't do right for doing wrong!!

it seems that such a scientific subject like diet simply comes down to doing what our instinct, hearts and gut-feelings tells us what to do :wacko:
 
Its very worrying too... I never fed raw chicken wings with my old dogs, but after seeing all the good advice on K9 started feeding chicken wings.

Now Im not sure what to do :unsure: - Oscar and Kobi love theirs so much. :p
 
My dogs are fine btw. All eating well. I haven't a clue why they up chucked the wings. They were freshly bought. No reason to think that anything was wrong with them.

What's put me off was the sharp, little bone splinters and the thought of what they could do to my dogs insides. Like you and Paula Mark.

I'm no longer walking around like Quasimodo just got the occasional twinge if I move the wrong way to quickly.

That is why I prefer to feed necks.

I stopped giving mine wings because they practically swallow tham whole (w00t) and I found they seemed to make them dandruffy but when I stopped their coats where dandruff free :unsure:

Lesley - interesting that yours were swallowing them whole - I think it's a competitive thing. Josie and Lola started doing that as if it was a race to get it down before the other one came sniffing around with ideas of thieving, but if I crate Lola for her wing then they both spend ages savouring and crunching.

I think you can get sharp bits from any bone. Josie coughed up a small and very sharp triangle of marrow bone. I couldn't even see where it had chipped off the original bone, but I threw it away immediately.

glad they're alright now and your back's on the mend. Ella , who doesn't really care about food, eats the wings so fast she doesn't chew them ( only pet - no competition ) a few times she's sicked them back up, with surprisingly large bone splinters, this week she re-ate the vomit before I got to it :x

not giving her any more now :blink:
 
Glad to see another faddy/risky diet is getting less popular.

Really hope that all your dogs are ok, the ones that have had near misses and the ones that probably will if you are not really careful.
 
i lost a dobermann dog due to feeding bones.he died a long and painful death after suffering a long and painful operation.no i would never feed bones again to any of my dogs. :(

This is on a par with saying we shouldn't take them lure coursing because they might get injured!!!

I would rather take a risk with natural food than all the cr*p that is put into complete feeds.
