I have recently taken in a stray dog who is mostly very well behaved, but has on odd occasions urinated in the house. He has not been neutered yet - would this make a difference? We have 2 other dogs and wonder if he is trying to mark his territory?

I personally don't think so I have 1 nutered male & 3 complete males & I don't have a proplem. It is more likely to be the gettin used to his new home & as you say marking, I was advised by my vet to clean any urine with diluted bleach & not cleaning products or dissinfectant as some dogs like the smell & will urinate again in the same place, I think you might have to be patient a little longer good luck & enjoy your new house mate!!!

not diluted bleach, but biological washing powder or steam 
what breed is this stray? different breeds exhibit the same problems for different reasons
BTW - how do you know it is him? If you didn't see him do it, there's a chance one of your other dogs is scentmarking their territory for the benefit of the newcomer

Bio washing powder ( dilute) if carpet is very good , the enzymes in the powder help break down the bacteria which causes the odour. We have just bought a great steam cleaner which you use like a vac or comes apart to be used as a hand held steam cleaner, great for doing dog beds floors cooker etc and the great thing is NO chemicals which dogs can absorb through their pads. Another great cleaning dog friendly product is Simple Solution, you can buy this ready diluted in a spray bottle or in larger sizes to dilute as desired, can be used on soft furnishings, carpets, hard floors and outside runs & toilet areas ,you can get it from most large pet shops or online.
Neutering wont help with a dog toileting inside! are you sure the dog has no underlying health reason for the urinating ? We have a female who has spay incontinence, she only does it when asleep after a drink after a long walk, but it could be because he can't hold himself, it could be a nervous issue or scent marking, hierarchy can cause issues between dogs who are neutered too its not always a testosterone induced behaviour . Try not to tell him off when you find the puddle rather encourage him to go outside more often, maybe on his own so he does't feel presured and lots of praise when he does go so he associates toileting outside as a good thing.
