Hi

My whippet Pip has just started crying through the night.

He's crate trained and used to put himself to bed pretty much at bedtime but last few nights he's been crying - a lot. He's 6 months now and the crate is downstairs which has never been a problem before. Any ideas how to help him with his sleeping again? He's less keen to get into the crate now too.

Thanks,

Mark

Could he have heard something outside like a cat or fox that has unsettled him? If it continues bring the crate near you like in your room, so he is reassured; then when he is settled move it back (maybe in steps - outside your room for a few nights, a little further for a few nights etc.)until he is in his normal place. Its possible something has coincided with a fear period so you need to be careful with him now.

Hi Joanne,

Thanks for the advice. Don't know a lot about fear periods - whats your experiences with them?

Mark

Just that if a traumatic event occurs it can have a bigger impact than normal. Puppies have a couple of fear impact periods and the second can occur around 6 months of age. Events that scare them then can be influential on their development. You need to be reassuring and encouraging; lots of happy voices and praise!

I agree with JoanneF.

When you reintroduce him to the kitchen, you could try an Adaptil diffuser. Also might be worth trying the radio on quietly?
