Hi everyone

I've just got a new whippet dog yesterday and I'm having problems already! I already own a 1 year old bitch called Molly (the fawn one - if I manage to attach the picture) and got a little boyfriend for her called Lenny (4 months). Things are going well apart from at dinner time. Molly has always been a fussy eater and hardly eats anything, Lenny eats like a horse. They have a bowl each but Lenny eats all his at break neck speed then pushes Molly out of the way and finishes hers as well. No fights yet, but has anyone got any suggestions to avoid any?

Any more advice on how to make sure that they get on ok would be appreciated. Molly has been spayed so theres no worries there.

Cheers

Jez

Hi jezza

I would still feed them together but give the older one a meal on her own at a different time so you can be sure she is getting some.

I am sure she will learn eventually that if she doesnt get her dinner then it will be gone!!!

Good Luck they looks a lovely pair.

Welcome to K9 - Jezza  Ive got a 10 month old whippet and an 11 week old one. I had similar problems only Oscar the older one would growl at the puppy at first when he tried to steal his.

I just supervise and make sure they both get some food and praise them well for being good and sharing.

Im sure it will work out in the end, ...the advice on here was that the dogs sort themselves out eventually - and golly they do just that.

Lovely dogs by the way. o:)

Your whippets are lovely, Jezza, welcome to K9!!

No advice from me, I'm afraid - I'll leave that to the multi-whippet households!! ;)

What is their breeding? :)

I have to supervise my 3 dogs eating. Ricky gets his dinner next to the back door, and when he is finished he is put outside into the garden. He eats fast. Robbie is fed at the other end of the kitchen,,he is a slow eater and will take his time. Tam is fed near the sink,,well away from the other 2 and he eats his fill, I pick his bowl up and thats him fed. I never leave my 3 eating by themselfs as a war would break out (w00t) . In the evening Tam is fed his 3rd meal of the day,,I stay with him and dont let the other 2 into the kitchen. Just supervise for the time being and im sure she will get better at eating in time :))

I make sure my 3 are seperated. Ella has hers in the kitchen, Kit in the lounge and Gabbi near the patio window - they all have different appetites, Ella wolfs hers down, Kit makes it last and Gabbi is a growler if anyone goes near so for ease they are all seperated and they can enjoy their meals in peace that way. They get to know too, as soon as i start getting the food ready they all go and get in their places until it's "dished up" :D

2 gorgeous dogs you've got btw!

welcome to k9.what a lovely pair they are :huggles: :huggles:

I had that at first when I introduced my second one, a rescue and a little older than the first. As she'd been a stray she was fanatical about her food and would shovel hers down and then move on to Tess's.

Tess soon realised that if she didn't eat quicker she'd go hungry and so speeded up.

No problems at all now as the rescue has realised there is no hurry, and Tess has learnt to stnad up for her rights (and her dinner)

BTW they are really beautiful- you're very lucky

This is a good opportunity to get your girl to get used to eating properly. Bad eaters are such a nuisance. I would not give her anything separately unless I start to worry about her loosing weight. And growliong is just not tolerated. As others already said, she will work it it out soon enough. I always had problem with picky eaters. An old breeder told me to feed pups only twice a day and they will wolf it down. I followed her advice with my last litter and Madelaine is certainly a good eater, and the older girls soon caught up. Nowdays I only have to rattle their dishes and they are next to me waiting. And their food is gone in seconds. Hooray!!!

UPDATE!!

Thanks for everyones advice, things are going ok at the moment. We have decided to feed molly first, while holding onto Lenny, then mhen molly has finished, we feed lenny. They seem to be ok about this and molly has started eating loads of food now :D

We still feed them in the same room but from different bowls and hopefully molly will eat her dinner so fast that there won't be any left for Lenny to nick!!

Cheers

Jez
