Hi all

Not really realising it, I think we may have got a pretty good dog in Sedge - he is beautiful (well I would say that wouldnt I!!)  He has a good pedigree etc, and I think I might like to have a go at showing him.  So to a complete novice (have absolutely no idea about these things!!) what advice can you offer?  Where do I start?!

Thanks

Marianne

Hi Marianne

Yes, do try with your Sedge, but first of all find out where your local ring training class is. Maybe an advert in local petshops or Vets will tell you where to find one.  A few visits to a class will help you both to know what to expect at a show and give you both some confidence. Also they may have some schedules for local shows, if you are lucky there will be other whippet people there who will help you.

Join your local Whippet breed club, if you let me know where you are located I can give you the secretary's phone number.  Attend a breed club  show first if possible, not a general Championship show, as people have more time at these to talk to a newcomer and advise  on how and where to show your whippet.

Have you discussed showing with Sedge's breeder?  This is probably the best person to help you if they show their own dogs.

Good luck to you both,

Hi Liz

Thanks for the advice - I will ring his breeder as she does show her dogs.  Im in Hampshire (uk) so if there is a breed club somwhere nearby Id be greatfull for their contact details.  He goes to general obediance classes, ill see if the trainer does any 'show' training.

Thanks Marianne

Go to www.pedigreedogs.co.uk and look up local societies you should find several, and the secretaries should be able to put you on the right road. Again if you look under whippets on pedigreedogs you will find the name and address of your local whippet club secretary.
