New PuppyHi there, we are hoping that our new puppy will be home with us by 13 July. We have never had a Whippet before. We had Beardies and were able to teach recall by voice, whistle and hand signals, will this be possible with our new dog? She is a blue brindle and will be 8 wks when we bring her home. Do you have any ideas for keeping her little body warm? Beardies have wonderful long coats so I was thinking perhaps I could make her something to wear, are there any knitting or sewing patterns available? All help will be appreciated.

I've had Border Collies and now have my first whippet and have trained her the same and she is great! But must admit I was concerned about the hunting 'deafness' but have had none of it.
Citycroft coats are great, they fit well and are not expensive at all, various people knit jumpers too - hope someone helps with a knitting pattern!

Welcome to you and your little one when she arrives. I've knitted this for Grace, and you could scale it down by using thinner wool and smaller needles (and obviously reducing the length):
WHIPPET JUMPER
Double knitting wool. Approx 6oz yarn, size 4 mm needles.
(For large whippet/greyhound use chunky wool and larger needles.)
Cast on 76 stitches K1 P1 ribbing for 2 inches
Then stocking stitch to 18 inches including the ribbing
Decrease 1 stitch each side each knit row, to 56 stitches, then work in ribbing K1 P1 for 5 inches which makes collar
Underpiece - Cast on 30 stitches and work in ribbing K1 P1 for 4 inches increase evenly to 36 stitches and still ribbing continue until 9 inches.
Decrease 1 stitch beginning and end of each row to 1 stitch. Cast off
Sew together leaving a hole on either side for whippets front legs to go through
Collar folds back like a turtle neck sweater.
I had my first whippet after only having had border collies, and have found that it is more a partnership with a whippet rather than a 'I tell you and you do it'. A bit of a culture shock at first, but now that I am used to it I love her to bits. Whippets don't have much of a conscience (a bit like a cat) so expect her to pinch food off the kitchen counters. Of course it may just be that I am pants at training!

Thanks to you all for your kindness in passing on your good wishes for our new puppy. We have decided to call her Jenny and I will try to post some pics when she arrives. I say try because I am a complete novice in using discussion groups, it is more good luck than good management if I get something uploaded, having said that, I am now confident that if I have a problem with Jenny or if I want some guidence, that I can call on my friends at K9. At this time of year Jenny should be fine without any coats or jumpers.
Whippets generally do only need a coat when it is really cold or raining - they're not as wimpy as they look!

Welcome to K9 and to whippet servitude ... as my son said to me the other day, why own a dog when you can be owned by a whippet!
Your pup should be fine without a coat at this time of year, although I have a tiny fleece puppy sweater that mine have worn on chill breezy summer days in the garden. And I'll recommend Citycroft too.
As for recall mine recall to voice and whistle, but are usually too far away for hand signals ... adult whippets can leave you behind frighteningly quickly when they run. Mine do obedience and agility though and respond well to hand signals there.
