Hi All,

I got a got a puppy (Oscar) he is a Cavatzu and is now 9 weeks old. I got him nearly 2 weeks ago and we quickly got him toilet trained and he was weeing on puppy pads and was pooping in the garden every time.

We have now gone back to work after having nearly two weeks off work with him and leave him in the kitchen during the day when no one is in. I leave him with the radio on, Kong full of peanut butter and treats and food and water, also leave his bed in the crate and leave the crate door open and his favorite toys.

I am aware that a puppy should not be left alone for long periods of time however in our case this can not be helped. We was told that the owners of this puppy changed their mind and he would go to the dogs home instead. I thought it would be better for him to have a loving home rather than ended up in kennels. He is not showing any signs of distress when left alone and seems happy lying in his crate when were in the house. And I must not be the only person to work full time and have a puppy.

I have started to notice that of an evenings now that he is not even attempting to use his puppy pad or go outside for the toilet and he will just wee and poo where he chooses. I reward him when he does go on the pad however it just seems like we have taken 5 steps back.

He has his second lot of injections on the 6th May and can be taken out for walks a week after then so I am not sure if this will help.

Any tips on how to ensure I can get toilet training completed would be greatly appreciated

How many hours is he left during the day? You are right that you can't be the only one that has a puppy and works but they do tend to have a dog sitter or walker come in during the day. Do you have anyone come in to look after him? I'm a dog sitter and walker and am currently looking after 2 puppies. 1 whom I take 4 days a week while the owner is at work. And another that I take out for 2 hours during the day. They are both very happy and well adjusted puppies.

First thing I would recommend is that you invest in such a person to come in a few hours during the day. And he/she can continue with the puppy training that you have started.

One of my puppies, her owner told me from the beginning to take her outside and put her on a patch of grass and say 'wee wee' to instigate her going. And she is superb at going and has been from the beginning.

Ditch the puppy pads!
All you are doing, if you use puppy pads or paper, is teaching your puppy to toilet indoors.

The best way to toilet train a puppy is to take them to the garden after eating, after sleeping, after playing and any time they look a bit distracted. Wait calmly until they toilet and then give them huge praise and a fantastic treat. Do not wait for them to walk towards you, the reward must be immediate.

After a while you should see your puppy start looking for you to go to the garden because they want the treat that they get there.

Never chastise for any mistakes your puppy makes. They are just mistakes, nothing more. If you chastise they will end up with worse behaviour problems.
