My dog makes a strange breathing noise :s

Hi, im hoping someone will be able to help me on this.

My dog last week went stiff and started making a snorting type noise. After a few mins it stopped and she went back to herself.
Yesterday she did it again, only this time I took a short video of it in the hope that someone could identify what it is.

Ive attached the video here. Can anyone advise on what it is that is wrong?

Hello,

I think this might be what is called 'reverse sneezing' or dogs with a trachea that partially collapses from time to time can make a noise like this.

Dogs don't usually take any harm from either, but I would definitely pay your vet a visit and let him see the video. He will be able to tell you for sure.

it does look a bit like reverse sneezing, whippets do it occassionally, and it is common in shortnosed breeds apparently.

The first time my dog did it i completley panicked, but the person i was with had seen it before thank goodness. I took mine to the vets, without a video (very quick of you) and they told me to look at some videos on youtube (weird eh?) to see if this was the same. They also said to keep a diary of when it happened and for how long and potential triggers. And to bring him back if it started to happen often. Mine always does it at a friend of mine's house which is really dusty and dirty. I don't like to take him there anymore.

If it is reverse sneezing as opposed to a trachea problem, it is caused by an irritation in the nasal passages, which they try and clear by snorting, a bit like a yobbo, sniffing heavily. My vet recomended lifting their head up, as they tend to have their head down and covering their nostrils, until they swallow which clears the irritation. I don't like to cover mines nostrils, but i do lift his head and massage his throat, but if i say 'head up' to him, he does and it clears itself.. Mine also does it for attention now! At the end of a working day when he wants to go home, he stops if i say 'do you want to get in the car?'........

It does look very alarming, and it is weird how unnaffected they seem after. I would also recomend taking your dog to the vet for a good old check up, and to see if there is a cause, something in her passages or something. Well done for being so quick with the video! Definitely a vet visit armed with the video... that would really freak me out!
