She`s made a lovely dog,so reminds me of our Bella

Have just adopted lurcher whippet cross. Great house dog but needs to be on lead and wants to run when on lead if she gets good smells. Do they become easier or less needy to escape? I'm finding that if my soon closes door slowly she's out to escape, will we ever be able to be in our relatively large garden in front of a forest without worrying that she is going to bolt off? Sorry for all the unanswerable questions, I'm just needing some positive reassurance. It's early days and she doesn't know us we'll yet, just adopted her on Saturday. I previously had a collie/whippet cross who liked to chase small animals but always returned and walked by my side. Thank you in anticipation.
