Microchipping laws. question!

The law now states that all puppies must be micro chipped by 8 weeks of age. Presumably normally by the breeder of the litter

If a puppy is sold before 8 weeks of age (for example 7 weeks) who is now responsible for the micro chipping, the breeder or the new owner/keeper by 8 weeks of age ???

Could this be a loophole where breeders themselves avoid micro chipping their litters!

I'd still say the breeder as you'd have paperwork from the breeder saying where it came from but that's.a Guess

I'm sure all responsible breeders will microchip their litters by 8 weeks of age.

I do have strange thoughts sometimes and this was just one of them!

If the law says "by 8 weeks" then that is what it means. If a breeder sells them before then they could pass that responsibility to the new owner. The new owner would still be bound, by the law, to get the puppy microchipped.

That was just what I was thinking! And by 8 weeks of age too, saving the breeder the expense.

Many breeders are reluctant to microchip tiny puppies. I know you can now get smaller chips but it still puts some people off having the procedure done, especially if you've watched a vet botch it up.

Most reputable breeders will be happy to manage the expense. I expect the paperwork would be a pain in the neck though.

In the past we would only chip our dogs when they got to 6 months. Whippets being a fine skinned breed we maybe are too cautious.

I think 8 weeks is too young for all but the larger breed dogs imo ..the other thing I don't like about this law is it may encourage BYB to get rid of the pups earlier so they don't have the added expense of microchipping..and that's not good for the pup..also I don't know about every microchips company but the one my dogs are chipped with you have to pay £15 to change the details..seems a bit daft charging a breeder at 8 weeks then the new owner a few weeks later to change the details. I see no reason why it can't be done with the pups injections if the pup is big enough..let's face it the pup won't be out before then anyway and if it is , it's not likely gonna be the kind of owner who would vaccinate and microchip anyway

I know what you mean Raven. We had Timber chipped soon after we got him and his yelp still comes back to me now. He wet himself too. If I had known, I would actually have waited until he was under the anaesthetic for his neutering op. Thinking back they saidit was the size of a grain of rice, and that he would barely feel it. WHICH???Because it can't be both! Unfortunately the law is the law ...

It used to be possible to microchip your puppies as a whole litter and as they left home at 8 weeks record the new owners details on the individual forms which were then added to the microchip database in the new and first owners name. Now with the new law it seems that the breeder must be the 1st owner which just does not make sense!
