Microchip Vs Ear Tattoo

Since neither of my girls have either microchip or tattoo I thought I would ask for some advice, which one do you think is best, both for security and for the dog? Also how do they do the tattoo? my friend's wire-haired vizla has one but he was tiny when he had his done by the breeder so she doesn't know.

I have 1 chipped and 2 tattooed, I had 1 tattooed myself and the other was done as a pup. They make up a kind of spiked stamp with the dogs number to be and stamp the dots in the ear then rub ink into it. It takes about the same time as a chip to be done and hurts about the same going by the reaction of the tattooed one vs the chipped one.

The one slight draw back to tattooing for me is they tattooed the ear that stands up and he is a mainly white dog so its there for all to see.

Sorry not much help as I have no problem with either but probably would go down the tattoo route again if I had another dog

Weve got 5 micro chipped and though there ok 3 of them have migrated one going down the shoulder blade ,hopefully it will stay there and not travel any further :sweating:

We had jacob our last pup tattooed and i am very happy with it , the women smeared ink onto his ear until there was quite a lot on it then she got like a stapler which had foam on one side and tiny pins on the other ,one quick squeeze and it was done, jacob did cry once but all my others did with the micro chip , then the women rubbed more ink into his ear and he loved that bit , we are getting another pup soon and he will be having a tattoo :thumbsup:

My dog was tatooed as a pup because the breeder was concerned about the microchip migrating, and I thought it was a good idea for that reason. But when I saw a special offer on for microchips I had that done as well because its a more common form of identification that our local vets, police and dog wardens are familiar with and I was worried that they may not find the tatoo or know how to use it. I suppose I thought, for the extra cost, if you have both done then double the chance of being reunited should the dog go missing. My microchip company allow you to register temporary addresses if you go on holiday and have your dog looked after by a carer in their home, which is useful.

I HAVE 3 MICRO CHIPPED AND 2 TATOOED AS WELL AS MICRO CHIPPED .NONE OF THE MIRO CHIPS HAVE MOVED AND HAVE STAYED

WHERE THEY SHOULD BE. TATOOING IS USUSLLY A BIT CHEAPER.

We had Star microchipped, his has migrated to his shoulder it still works ok as vet checked it :thumbsup: but it does show up quite a bit

Skye has also been microchipped and hers has stayed put so far

our dogs micro chips are the bio therm ones ,they suppose read there temperature but are not very reliable and cost was £32. each , tatooing cost £25 .

so not a great deal of difference.

Think the ordinary microchips are a lot cheaper

My three are micro-chipped but a breeder friend has all her pups tattooed, partly because microchips can migrate and be missed when scanning but mainly because she feels tattooing is more of a deterrent to thieves as it is easily visible should the thief try and sell a dog.

Kennett is getting his next month, both Popsy and Eskil were microchipped as small pups, Popsy cried, Eskil didn't make a sound (brave boy, like Kennett, no whining at jabs either). Eskil's still where it was put, not sure about Pop's since he's hairy and his skin is looser. The chip migrating can't harm the dog, and I believe when scanning a stray they do check all over the body not just one go at the neck (on the boy's ID tags it also says that they are microchipped).

the best way though probably would be chip+tattoo.
