Male dog peeing on child's swing

Hi i have a male dog who has just started lifting his leg to pee and is doing it on my son's swing everytime he goes outside. I was wondering if anyone had any advice to stop him from doing this? I have tried training to toilet at a certain part of the garden but it only seems to work for poos. It happens regardless of whether he has just been walked or not. He is not neutered yet as was advised by a vet to wait till he is 1 due to his size.

He is just marking ..my male dog has a few favourite places ..he will go all around them ..sharing his info lol..

I wouldn't imagine it would do much harm to the swing ..kids hang off the bars and swings in the park and gawd knows what's on them but they survive !!

If you are really worried you could try scrubbing it with biological washing powder (it removes the enzymes) ..but please be wary of telling him off because he may not understand you want him to pee else where , he may think he is trouble for peeing !!..good luck

I agree with Raven Oaktree. Just swill it off with a 10% solution of biological detergent. Any kind of negative action on your part could store up huge problems for the future. If you ever catch him peeing anywhere else tell him how clever he is!

By the way, you have a very enlightened vet! Dogs need to be fully mature before they are neutered. Leg cocking is a good sign that he is maturing. Neutering takes away the testosterone and that can make some dogs feel insecure and result in them displaying fear aggression, particularly around other dogs. Some dogs never need neutering. Just be led by you dog. If his sex hormones are causing huge problems once he is fully mature then by all means neuter him. The sort of problems you will see are scent marking indoors, running off after bitches, general rambunctiousness etc. Neutering will not cure lack of training though! It is generally thought that no more gain can be had from testosterone after the age of 18 months or thereabouts.

Thanks for your replies! My son has only just turned 1 so still very young and after my dog actually peeing on the swing while he was on it i thought i would ask incase there was a way to encourage him to do it elsewhere! He shares part of the garden with another dog and although they are best of friends my first thought was that he was marking my son's things as his own as opposed to the neighbour's dog. I have been giving him lots of praise every time he does it at the back of the garden! He is a bullmastiff cross and the vet had said to wait to neuter as he needs the testosterone to grow and that neutering him before a year could stunt his growth.

Yea ..your vet is right ..waiting to neuter and spay large dogs is a great idea..

The peeing I probably just because its a vertical post ..maybe the other dog has peed on it when you haven't seen and he is just scent marking ..because he has done it once he maybe wants to keep it topped up so to speak lol..when a dog scent marks they are leaving little messages for other dogs in the area..another comes along , sniffs ..or collects his 'pee mail'..and leaves his own little message ... I doubt very much your little one will come to much harm from him peeing on the swing leg ..pretty soon he will be into everything..a few germs here and there will only strengthen his immune system. Of course I not suggesting you let him teeth on the pole ..but if you hadn't seen your dog do that you would be non the wiser ..I would take him in the garden .use the command you use for doing a wee , but point to a different part of the garden..then really fuss him when he goes in another part of the garden. If you see him making his way to the swing to pee say come for wee wee..or what ever you say and try and draw him to another patch..but if he has already started don't startle him or shout for him to stop..just don't reward him . Most dogs just really really want to please us and will soon catch on that over there I get praise and treats ..here I get nothing ..hmm..i think I will go over there and get treats
