Magnotheraphy Units/boxes

Hi, does anybody use the magnotherapy boxes or units? Are they beneficial? Does anyone know where i can get one?

Hi Dave - I've never used one - that doesn't make them potentially less useful though!

Garry Comber uses one also. Personally I'm sceptical about anything that can't be proven scientifically, but where the care and welfare of your whippet is concerned, the phrase "what harm can it do to try it" is one that comes to mind

Many years ago when my first whippet got a knocked up toe I took her for some kind of electrotherapy on it, which involved her standing in a bowl of water while some kind of gadget vibrated the water around her foot (it looked like a soldering iron!) Her toe eventually healed, but I'm doubtful that the treatment speeded it up any.

But like I said, we all want what's best for our dogs so if it's available go for it. As for who sells these ..... no idea!

Magnotherapy is useful for injuries involving bone. e.g. fractures.

Electrotherapy / faradism works by stimulating the muscles or ligaments (dependant on current /pulse /frequency) I also think these are useful but like magnotherapy it's on the proviso that the treatment your using is suitable for the injury and used at the appropiate time within a healing period.

There is info out there, some from dubious sources but there is also a lot of medical evidence based papers floating about if you can get access to them. I'll try and get some links on. :thumbsup:

:thumbsup: I HAVE A MAGNATHEREPY BOX, WHICH I BOUGHT SECOND HAND. LUCKILY, TOUCH WOOD, I'VE NOT HAD TO USE IT FOR INJURIES, THUS FAR. I USE MINE TWICE A WEEK ON THE TONE-UP SETTING AND WHEN MY DOGS COME OUT OF IT, THEY ARE BOUNCING! THE DOGS' DON'T KNOW THAT IT SUPPOSED TO DO THEM GOOD SO I DON'T SEE A PLACEBO EFFECT AT WORK, THEY JUST LOVE THE AFTER EFFECT! :wub:

Bear in mind sometimes the people researching may have been sponsored with their research and may not be entirely independant. Although the general concensus with orthopaedic specialties is that pulsed magnotherapy is effective, especially in relation to breaks that are failing to heal (mal unions)

Additionally there is also concerns that magnotherapy can cause brain damage due to increased electrical activity in the brain. For this reason I would suggest the use of them only when appropiate i.e. only when recommended by a vet.

I have a magno pulse unit that I use and also I have the newer model which I am selling as I prefer the older unit. It is not the box, but the unit with a wrap that goes around the injured area. You could also lay the wrap in the bottom of a cage and it would be the same as the box. We had the box as well at one time, but sold it when we moved to a small cottage and were stuck for space for it. I prefer the wrap as I think its better to treat the affected area, and not the whole body. I hadn't heard that about brain frazzling, but ours always seemed to like being treated in it. The comparisons were similar to mobile phone radiation. To be honest I recon the devices being used in medicine are probably a damn sight more powerful than our Portamags but I felt obliged to mention it incase anyone decided to keep theirs on 24/7. :thumbsup:

The woman at our dog's swimming pool has the blanket type and says they're very good. :thumbsup:
