Mad 5 minutes

My puppy just had a bonkers 5 minutes (actually more like 30 minutes) charging around the house and garden, and making super-canine jumps on to the furniture (she is allowed although technically should 'ask').

My questions is why do dogs do this? Is it just a puppy thing? She has been well exercised and trained today, so shouldn't be too energetic. My parents' dog who is 3 or 4 years old often does this for a couple of minutes after a walk (especially if I happen to pop round when they have just got back). Its almost like the excitement is just too much for him. But he calms down after a couple of minutes usually.

Is it ok to let them burn it out? Or should I be trying to calm her down. Its like she is in a zone and can't focus on anything except running and jumping and barking. And picking fights with the grass. I keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn't get hurt or go anywhere that might be dangerous, but my instinct is to let her go for it! I wondered about popping her in her crate to cool off, but I was worried she might hurt herself in there.

I would follow your instincts. If she were living with a whole lot of dogs and roaming freely she would probably indulge in this behaviour naturally.

I think most people with Whippets get used to them doing Zoomies, it does usually reduce in frequency and time over the years but its always a possibility, they appear to be very happy doing it so let them get on with it.

My pup, cocker spaniel 11 weekd does this 2 or 3 times a day.

Goes absolutely mental and there is no catching him.

Hopefully he grows out of it as he 'is out of control' for these 10mins.

My 4 month Cockapoo also does this. She goes absolutely crazy for about 10 minutes - not sure if there is any pattern as to when or why. Though as she has got older these periods are becoming less crazy and shorter in length - so I'm hopeful she'll grow out of it.
