I thought I would ask on behalf of a friend who has a German Shepard cross what can help with a fussy eater who will also go a day or two without eating and then when eats has mostly loose/runny poo. He has tried arrow root which does work sometimes. The dog is on a raw diet so nothing processed. Dog seems well in himself, full of energy and weight is not a problem. I understand the breed can be prone to digestive issues but wondered if there is anything else to be tried?

Sometimes (sorry excuseme) some dogs don't get on well with raw. Your friend could try flash frying some of the food to help with the fussy eating, or try a good quality alternative food. Gentle dog food is cold pressed and scores a respectable 4.9 out of 5 on www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk and one of their selling points is that is can be felt alongside raw. It's not extruded to high temperatures and it uses good quality ingredients. My dog is fussy, but really likes it so maybe worth a look?

I wonder of this dog gets enough bone content in his meals. Bone can help make our poo's very hard.
Another suggestion would be to get some nice wet green tripe which has probiotic benefits, this will keep his diet all "Raw", it will help the natural enzymes and good bacteria in the gut.

Yes, the breed is pre disposed to digestive problems. There is a particular enzyme that many of them lack that can cause a problem. I cannot, for the life of me, remember the name of it. If that is what is the problem then the vet can prescribe a supplement which helps. It has to be given for life.
Google Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency as that may be it. Although it says voracious appetite is a symptom at the beginning it also says, later, that some dogs do not eat well.
Is the dog insured? If not, I would strongly advise it. Not just for this issue (which may already be excluded by new insurers) but for the many other issues that can arise in the breed.

Thank you so much gypsysmum2......I have googled EPI and it sounds exactly what is going on with my friends dog! I have sent the reference to him and hopefully he will get to the vets sooner rather than later.
